Morning sickness - does it hit suddenly?

This is my first pregnancy and I'm 5+5 weeks. I've been lucky enough not to suffer from any nausea or sickness yet (I've been totally exhausted and really sore breasts though). I've read though that it can start around six weeks. Does it tend to just start out of nowhere? I'm reserving all judgement as I know every stage and everyone is different, but naturally I'm feeling a bit anxious and would be interested in others' experiences.

Yes I found it just comes from nowhere almost like a wave over me. I had it quite early on then a couple of days without it and thought I was done (how naive was I!) then it came back daily but not very severe. Hopefully you will be one of those lucky people that never gets it but I wouldn’t shout that just yet! 😄

Yes, I’ve had HG in both my pregnancies & it started bang on 6 weeks both times. Prior to the 6 weeks, no symptoms bar some heartburn.

kikibo · 16/03/2020 08:46

In my first pregnancy it hit one morning at the end of the 5th week just before Christmas. Terrible. I still had some work to do, struggled through it and then laid myself down on the sofa until pretty much the end of February.
Christmas was off, and I still struggled to Prague and back, purely because it was a group trip and DH couldn't cancel and I had no help (we live abroad).

With the two it came on gradually like an hour or so in the afternoon to slowly get longer.

twigletpiglet17 · 16/03/2020 08:50

Oh no! There I was thinking I might be lucky. Totally agree though @LexiM I don't want to shout about it, as you never know. Also, even if this stage is ok I guess you never know how you'll feel later on.

I had a whole day sickness since 6 weeks :D. I swear I supported the whole craker industry until it started to ease up about 3 months. Crackers were the only thing that helped, ginger made me boak. I was feeling sick but never actually sick.

Both pregnancies were the same. Crackers, the anwser is crackers :D

YES. About 6.5 weeks I woke up felt kind of weary hungover. Walked downstairs, smelt my husbands coffee and was sick up in the toilet.

And this is the way it was, until 26 weeks!!

Mashed potato was all I could eat!!

I remember it well because I went to the obgyn(in usa) at about 5.5 weeks and she was like “oh your not sick yet, maybe next week” she said she could tell by looking at someone if they were going to get sickness!!

Also it was a boy, loads of people will say you only get sick with girls. So, that’s not true.

LittleBoyJuly2020 · 16/03/2020 09:07

I felt great until 7 weeks... Then it hit, slowly. Started with a bad taste in my mouth constantly, then the food aversions, then it was pure hell!
I got meds though and could functon again.
I'm 21 weeks now and finally feel good and relatively normal again.
I went off anything sweet at 7 weeks and now at 21 weeks, I still haven't eaten anything sweet Sad

I got the BFP on Xmas day, and suddenly went off all chocolate (major chocoholic before!) The sickness/nausea didn't start properly until I was 5-6 weeks.

user1333796 · 16/03/2020 09:10

Yeah you aren't in the clear yet I'm afraid. It usually starts at 6 weeks, but can be a bit sooner or later. Mine started with a strong gag reflex, eg seeing dog shit on the street I'd be wretching, but the vomiting and nausea didn't kick in for another few days.

Danielle95lab · 16/03/2020 09:13

Don't worry if you don't get it though! I'm nearly 8 weeks and only get nauseous when I don't eat. But that's it. And I've had a scan and baby's heart is beating strong. So don't stress if you don't get it either x

Double3xposure · 16/03/2020 09:13

I had all day sickness from 6 - 14 weeks. Fortunately it only started about 10am so I survived on breakfasts.

Pineappletree33 · 16/03/2020 09:17

I seem to get it around 6 weeks. Luckily nothing terrible just feeling hungover.
Very very early in my 4th pregnancy so nothing yet but my other 3 (1 baby, 2 mc) followed the same pattern.

Seasprayandsunshine · 16/03/2020 09:27

You could be one of the lucky ones though. I never got sick or nauseous once in my pregnancy. It does happen.

In fact, if I hadn't suffered with SPD from week 28 I wouldn't have known I was pregnant!

YakkityYakYakYak · 16/03/2020 09:30

I think it really varies. It started for me at around 8 weeks (I thought I had avoided it!) and lasted until about 13 weeks. No vomiting, I just felt nauseous all day unless I was eating (hence the 4 stone weight gain Blush)

WillWinterEverEnd · 16/03/2020 09:32

Yes, mine suddenly came on half way through a meal out with family. Went from feeling completely fine to feeling like I was going to vomit everywhere and it lasted from 5 weeks to pretty much 20 weeks non-stop.

FlashesOfRage · 16/03/2020 09:39

I just woke up on 5+0 a Monday and felt like I had the hangover from hell, it lasted till 6pm.

Tuesday seemed sort of normal where I wasn’t sure if the day before was just a random.

Wednesday the hangover feeling was back but worse so I knew that was it then.

I’m 7+0 today and I’ll feel two seconds away from vomiting from the moment I wake up until around 9-11pm... 👌

sarahc336 · 16/03/2020 09:51

Yes I went to bed one night fine woke up the next and bam felt so sick. It kicked in around 6 and a half weeks for me I think xx

kikibo · 16/03/2020 10:20

Yes to the pps who talked about appetite!

With DD1 it started with a complete loss of appetite at around 5 weeks. No sickness , just no idea what I actually fancied.
Then came sickness between 6 and 8 in the morning and then it hit like a bus.
The sickness was still quite bad with DS (though came on more gradually and no loss of appetite), but was much much easier with DD2.
I wonder whether it's got to do with them being so close together (15 months and 13 months apart), so my body was already used to the hormones.

Or maybe I knew how to deal with it better...

Isthistrueor · 16/03/2020 10:34

Mine did, yes. I was wiped out from 6 weeks with my first pregnancy and from about 5 and a half weeks with my fourth. I only get it with boy pregnancies for some reason, didn’t have it at all with my DD’s.

chocolate26 · 16/03/2020 10:36

I woke up one morning at exactly 6 weeks and thought I had a sickness bug, that sickness bug didn't go away for about 15 weeks!! But it did and does eventually go away for most people. Now at 26 weeks I only occasionally feel sick if I'm hungry and as soon as I eat it goes away. Congratulations!

20viona · 16/03/2020 10:37

Never had any.

livvvv · 16/03/2020 10:39

In my first pregnancy from about 5 weeks I had morning sickness all the way through my pregnancy pretty much until I have birth couldn't keep anything down was sick about 5 times a day it's was horrible 😂 and with this pregnancy I had morning sickness till about 14/15 weeks but I wasn't sick as much as my first just really nauseous all day which is almost worst. 1st pregnancy was a boy and this time I'm having a girl the joys 😂

ConstantlyPanicking · 16/03/2020 10:50

Oh yes. My first hit was the second I got off the train, on the platform with the entire train watching. was just before I hit 6 weeks and still suffering now with HG at 13 weeks. Don't be worried if you don't get it though. Everyone is SO different x
