Swimming and coronavirus

I'm 33 weeks pregnant with my first baby. I love swimming and have been going to aqua aerobics once a week, it really helps with my aches and pains.

But should I still go with all this coronavirus stuff going on? I've read the pool water should be fine (the chlorine kills off bugs) it's more the changing rooms that concern me. I don't really want to stop all my activities unless really necessary... but also don't want a coronababy!!!

I don't see why not. If you're worried, avoid other people in the changing room and wash your hands as you're leaving.

but also don't want a coronababy

The virus doesnt pass from mother to baby via the placenta.

Its business as usual. Just wash your hands on arrival, then on leaving the pool, then again when you get home.

They don't know how it may pass go babies yet. I never heard any more on the newborn and if they worked out how they got it.

Swimming wise I would think it's ok but can you just put some old clothes on and then have a proper wash when home? Don't touch your face in the mean time (or at least wash your hands before leaving)

There is no evidence to suggest an increased risk of miscarriage. There is also no evidence that the virus can pass to your developing baby while you are pregnant (this is called vertical transmission). It is therefore considered unlikely that if you have the virus it will cause abnormalities in your baby

From RCOG advice

teamseashore · 15/03/2020 20:55

I've read the RCOG guidance but I suppose my worry isn't necessarily passing the infection to my unborn baby - it's getting the infection myself in case that causes any problems / makes me quite ill. And obviously if I had the virus when I gave birth then I would assume I could pass it on to the baby. It's strange, my family are in Ireland and the mindset of everyone over there is completely different to people in England. Everyone is being much more cautious and already self - isolating to a degree. I can't help but wonder if we should really be doing the same. It's a hard call to make.

I think if you're worried about it, don't do it. I'm only 7 weeks but really trying to do the social distancing - not only because of the general risk of any fever in early pregnancy, but because I've had "mild" pneumonia before and it was horrendous. I can't imagine having to deal with it when pregnant! I might be being over cautious, but for me, the extra anxiety isn't worth it.

EssElsiee · 15/03/2020 21:17

They think that the baby contracted it outside the womb by the way x

Skeeter2020 · 15/03/2020 21:18

Don't take any risks where your baby is concerned Flowers

Luckystar20 · 15/03/2020 21:19

Chlorine kills the virus in the water op it's on the Swim England website

I think defo do what makes you feel calm and safe. Im going swimming today (39 weeks), but plan to handwash on leaving then shower when im home

I’ve been wondering the same thing OP, I love swimming at the moment as it really helps my SPD and I keep going back and forth on whether I should keep going.
On the one hand there has only been 1 confirmed case currently in my county and the current government advice is to only self isolate if you’re showing symptoms and most people I’ve spoken to have said the same as above, to continue as normal but just increase your awareness to hygiene and wash your hands etc.
But then on the other hand I keep seeing people saying we should be on lockdown already and going to busy public spaces is reckless and selfish.
It’s such a tough choice! In some ways I wish the gov would enforce a lockdown so I have no choice in the matter as I’m driving myself mad going back and forth 😂
