Walking in pregnancy

I'm 21 weeks and my dogs need walking approx 1hr 45mins - 2hrs per day. I really enjoy these walks and not looking forward to when I can no longer go out with dogs and partner on these walks.

I've got it in my head that maybe I can continue these walks right up until 30 + weeks, does this sound doable? This is obviously based on me not developing chronic pain anywhere (back, spd etc)

We walk in the countryside so it is a little hilly in places but so far no problems.

Anyone managed to keep up a good routine like this late into pregnancy?

I was walking mine right up until I went into labour on due date. The day before I'd walked up all sorts to get him moving. I had a burst of energy at the end so it never really crossed my mind to stop walking.

I walked dogs until right to the end of my first pregnancy. Kept me fit for labour!

I don't have any dogs but walking is my main mode of transport - I'm 36 weeks now and still walk everywhere. I'm much slower going to hills than I used to be, but it's not been a problem at all.

I don't have dogs, but was walking an hour each way on the school run up to 42 weeks with a pushchair

Yes, keep walking for as long as it is physically comfortable. Your general speed might slow down as you get further along and like Persipan you might find hills difficult, but it will be great for keeping you healthy & ensuring your baby is in a good birth position. I walked everywhere right up to my due date, a highlight of my pre-birth weeks of maternity leave was walking to Costa and back each day for a hot chocolate!

I did get some mild pelvic pain (not full blown SPD) in the last few weeks but figured it was better to walk slowly and rest if I needed to. I would have really struggled with being stuck in the house each day without enough fresh air

Thank you all! Gives me hope that I can keep going right up until near due date. I work from home so it's literally the only exercise I get and I really treasure it.
First trimester walks were not so fun with the sickness but I'm feeling good now and hoping it's something I can continue with Smile

Why won't you be able to keep going?

LittleBoyJuly2020 · 15/03/2020 13:45

@Skeeter2020 I was just worried that it may become too much of a struggle when bump is big (and warmer weather) I've noticed I am pretty exhausted after the walk now and I guess I was worried that would only get worse as time goes on.

I fully intend to keep going though, it's the best part of my day!

35 weeks here and still walking 5 miles a day. It is a great low impact form of exercise which will keep you fit for labour

rottiemum88 · 15/03/2020 20:05

We have two big dogs that need a lot of exercise and I continued to walk them with DH until the day before DS was born at 41+2. We live on a hill which I did find challenging towards the end as I'd get quite breathless, but we adjusted pace to walk a bit slower and I was fine.

LittleBoyJuly2020 · 15/03/2020 20:21

Thank you @squee123 and @rottiemum88 that is inspiring to hear Smile I fully intend to keep going until birth, I'm already sad that I'll have to miss a few weeks/month worth of walks after the birth so knowing I can keep going until the end is really nice to know!
