High blood sugar

I saw the midwife yesterday who tested my urine, it tested as high sugar levels and I'm booked in for a glucose intollerance test next week.

My question is for those that have high sugar levels, were you physically sick if you are something sweet?

It might be a coincidence but I've had some sweets today and have been sick twice.

No I haven't been physically sick - my levels were just slightly over the threshold when I did the GTT, I've controlled it since through diet but never been physically sick when I ate something sweet x

Hello. I feel sick when I eat sweet things too. But have been told that isn’t necessarily linked to Gestational diabetes. Having my test next week to find out. I’d be interested if you could please keep us updated what you find out. I’m a bit worried about taking the test and being sick during it 😔

Thanks for the replies.

I will let you know how it goes.

Anyone got any tips who has had the test?

I heard the drink is pretty horrible, maybe some chewing gum would help.

If you are having a GTT you won’t be allowed to chew a gum i am afraid. You can drink water while waiting, and the drink is not dreadful tbh.

Good luck!

I always felt ill not only after sweets( which I barely ate this pregnancy) but at high carb foods.
My two GTT came negative, but I was self testing anyways and knew I had it. The hospital diagnosed me on self testing and went on medication also as I'm not tolerating even GD friendly food.

So I guess some people do have some symptoms of GD.

@R2D2abc hello sorry to bother you. How did you self test and did the NHS take the data seriously vs the GT test?
My dad is diabetic and lent me a normal testing kit. Can I just use that and show them the results instead of doing the GT test? X

I did buy a new machine that had great reviews as being accurate. An old machine may not be working properly.
So after testing myself a few days I phoned the diabetes team which agreed to redo my GTT. I did that but came back normal. But I was still having really high readings and I knew I was doing everything properly( like washing hands, etc) and was continuously feeling ill after eating, blurred vision, extremely tired and extremely thirsty ( I was drinking over 5 litres of water and was still thirsty).

Then I phoned again to know my result and the diabetes team agreed to give me their machine to test for a week because they said they don't use mine and didn't like it. Ended up still having high readings with their machine, so I was diagnosed and also put on medication because some of my food was GD friendly and I should have been able to tolerate with diet.

I think that they always prefer the GTT, but because I had so many symptoms ( and to say it community midwife and my usual consultant put it to normal pregnancy stuff) and myself just insisting to rule this out, they found that self monitoring was a good option for me.

This is just to share my own experience.
This is my 4th baby but first with GD, so I know how a normal pregnancy feels like.

Hi JKD1982 (sorry dont know how to tag people)

The test was fine, they do.a blood test then give you a small drink to have which tastes like lucozade, drink it in 5 mins (I knocked it back) it was tasty, then you have to wait 2hrs and get tested again. Take some entertainment.
