Whooping cough jab

I had my whooping cough jab yesterday.
My arm is absolutely killing me! Anyone else had this happen?
Iv had my flu jab weeks back and it ached but this jab has seriously made my arm hurt.

Yes, mine was sore too, it went away fully for me about 2 days later. The nurse giving it warned it might happen.

BadCatDirtyCat · 14/03/2020 08:32

How painful is "absolutely killing me" exactly? I had mine on wed and it was very sore (didn't want to lie in that side as it hurt), still quite sore on Thurs and a bit on Friday. Gone now. Flu jab I almost didn't feel at all Hmm so whooping cough is definitely worse.

pollypocketrocket · 14/03/2020 09:17

I can barely lift it to get dressed and anything touches it hurts so bad.
It's more than an ache it's like it's been run over by a car 😂
I feel fairly groggy today so don't no if Iv reacted a bit to it.

If you're nursing the arm rather than using it as normal it'll hurt more.

Thumbellini · 14/03/2020 09:29

I had mine this week too and expected it to be similar to the flu jab but my arm is still sore! Not really bad anymore but definitely still notice it

pollypocketrocket · 14/03/2020 10:14

Did anyone feel a bit grotty after?
I feel hungover too 😔

My arm really killed after. Took a few days to fully go away. I was also very tired an exhausted the day after, I couldn't get off the sofa! Baby was also unusually quiet which worried me. The third day I was fine and baby was back to normal. Don't know if it was a coincidence, but logically your immune system is learning what to do against whooping cough so tiredness makes sense

BecauseReasons · 14/03/2020 12:22

Could also be that you're heading down the road to a cough or cold.

jdy123 · 14/03/2020 12:30

Mine was sore ! I couldn't lift it it felt like I'd been well and truly punched by a boxer for days haha.
Was worse than my flu one I think
I didn't feel ill after it but nurse said it's common to.

SarahD19 · 14/03/2020 12:36

@pollypocketrocket mine was absolutely awful This pregnancy too! It was worse this pregnancy than last. It is only the second time I’ve ever experienced a jab to be so debilitating in my lifetime. It was agony to move. I struggled to drive or do day to day things. It swelled and I couldn’t lift my arm at all.

I think the needle happened to go in too high at an angle and it was about that rather than just the injection itself. My friend was telling me some people sue for it in the US when that happens 😂

pollypocketrocket · 14/03/2020 17:52

Iv read loads of posts on internet and it does seem a lot of people get arm pain with this one.
It's so odd as the nurse actually didn't mention any side effects to me which was poor.

Iv been asleep all afternoon. Admittedly Iv had two bad nights sleep but I had such a headache I went to bed. Still have it now. Feel like iv been out partying way to hard! Eugh!

Mine hurt for a couple of days too. The nurse told me that the vaccine includes diphtheria and tetanus too which is why it can hurt more and can cause groggy side effects.

Absa · 14/03/2020 22:08

Because it has tetanus in as well it makes your arm really heavy and sore. Will wear off in a few days.

Bean20 · 14/03/2020 22:52

Kinda wishing I hadn't read this post before having mine 🙈 won't be for 7 weeks yet so hopefully I'll forget about reading this lol x

pollypocketrocket · 15/03/2020 08:38

Don't be scared please. It's worth the pain and the feeling crap for the baby's sake as a new born.
It's a bit pants yes feeling how I have felt but she was busy kicking my belly last night so she's happy 😃

BecauseReasons · 15/03/2020 09:02

Yeah @Bean20, don't stress about it. Just make a conscious effort to use the arm normally afterwards. Plus, I wouldn't call it pain as much as discomfort. Compare it to actually giving birth and the aftermath of healing from that and it doesn't even register.

Bean20 · 15/03/2020 10:16

Thanks, I know it's worth it for the safety of my baby. This is my first pregnancy so I think I'm going to have to man up a bit, I had the blood test the other day and had to look away before passing out and was thinking to myself, this is nothing compared to what I'm in for 😂🙈

SarahD19 · 15/03/2020 12:52

I suspect there’s a couple of issues here. First time round I had a bit of discomfort for a few days but it was possible to keep active and keen using the arm.

The more recent injection I had was too high in my arm and I suspect this is why I am still having pain even so long after the injection. To clarify, if this is what happens, to say “keep using the arm as normal” is completely the wrong advice. It simply isn’t possible.

I had a similar experience about 10 years ago. It took over a year and physio type exercises to regain full mobility.

Please make sure is commenting you are distinguishing between routine discomfort and the actual condition of potential vaccination injury. I think the technical phrase is SIRVA.

ChickenNugget86 · 15/03/2020 14:37

I'm such a wimp with needles. I was expecting mine in January when my GP was going to have some in. Was at a hospital appointment in October time and the midwife was like "we will do it today" it took me by surprise.
My arm ached for about 2 days and I remember sleeping when I got home.
I'm having to take injections into my tummy every day and prick my finger for blood while getting diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I hate it every day and it hasn't got me over my fear but I'm doing it for the baby x

Bol87 · 15/03/2020 16:07

I wonder sometimes of how much they hurt is to do with the nurses technique.. I’ve certainly found that the case with the 3000 blood tests I’ve had this pregnancy. Sometimes, I’ve not even noticed the needle go in, other times it’s stung like mad! Some leave a bruise & some don’t ..

My flu jab left me with a painful arm this time, I couldn’t sleep on that side for a fair few days! But whooping cough was fine, just hurt that night really then fine!

Sprintfinish · 15/03/2020 17:12

With DC1 the jag site had a swollen lump for a few weeks and was achey, I was very aware of it. With DC2 it was a bit sore that night but nothing after that.

SarahD19 · 15/03/2020 17:48

@Sprintfinish that is the same as me but in reverse. Was sore first time but only a matter of days. The more recent one was high in my arm though and is only just starting to feel better weeks and weeks later. I’m sure it was how the injection went in as it was higher than normal @Bol87 I think this links to what you’ve said too.
