19+2 weeks pregnant and no movements

Hi everyone,

I am current 19+2 weeks pregnant with my first baby

I still am yet to feel any movement? Is this Normal at my gestation? Everyone else with babies or who are pregnant have said they started to feel movement around 17 weeks and I still haven't felt anything.

I saw a midwife last week and told her that I am still not feeling anything and she said I should feel soon and asked if am I sure that I'm not feeling anything but I am sure. I'm so desperate to feel the baby move that I am over examining every single feeling in my stomach.
Everyone else who asks me if I felt kicks yet is always shocked when I say no too and I know that they don't mean to, but it worries me as I automatically have been thinking that somethings wrong?

This is my first so I am really anxious anyway as it's all so new to me, I just need to know that everything is okay in there.

I have my 20 week scan later next week & im so worried that I don't even know if I can wait that long to make sure the baby is okay - I've been considering going to a private ultrasound clinic to just hear her heartbeat and see her wriggling around.

What makes me overthink more, is that at all of our scans we have had apart from the early pregnancy scan (which is 3 scans, 1 private 2 nhs) they have all mentioned how active the baby is, so I think I just expected to feel something soon because they said that she doesn't stop moving around in there.

Has anyone else experienced this? Should I be concerned or wait it out?

Thank you

I didn’t feel my first until around 21/22 weeks & that was only tiny flutters. I’m quite long in the body (I’m 5’6” but ‘taller’ than my 6’ husband sat down) & have good abdominal muscles so very much carried dc1 ‘inside’ which combined with an anterior placenta meant I couldn’t feel the movements early on. After a week of flutters they became quite strong. It’s also possible that until then she’d had her back to my stomach too. Also worth keeping in moline that at this gestation they have a relatively large amount of space to move about in.

I did feel movement a lot earlier each subsequent pregnancy.

Halloweenbabyy · 13/03/2020 09:36

21+ weeks for me.

GreenLeafTurnip · 13/03/2020 09:48

Everyone told me I'd feel glitters but actually it was exactly like my muscles twitching. Wasn't until I googled it that I realised I'd been feeling him move for about a week. I think I was around 18 weeks at that point. Any chance you've been feeling muscle twitches?!

GreenLeafTurnip · 13/03/2020 09:48

Flutters not glitters!! Bloody autocorrect.

Pineapplebaby · 13/03/2020 10:37

If it’s your first, it’s very normal not to feel anything until 20+ weeks, usually it’s only earlier than that if it’s a subsequent pregnancy.
Also, do you know if you have an anterior or posterior placenta? Mine is anterior so I knew I wouldn’t feel anything until a lot later. I totally skipped the flutters part and went straight to a proper kick at 22/23 weeks!

All the scans I had as well seeing him bounce around and I felt nothing!
I think it’s only when you get to 24/25 weeks and not felt anything that it’s then a possible concern.
I’m sure everything is absolutely fine.

I’m in the same boat, 18w and haven’t felt a thing although I’m over examining every little twinge and I’m not 100% sure if it’s baby or my body. Buuut we had a private sex scan last week and saw baby moving lots and my placenta was in front likely cushioning the blow. The sonographer said for now you might not feel much because of the placenta but in a few weeks the kicks will be stronger so I’m just waiting

RhymingRabbit3 · 13/03/2020 11:42

Really normal. I felt movements at about 21 weeks first time. NHS website says some time between 16 and 24 weeks, so 20 weeks is average.

User12885663 · 13/03/2020 11:55

I can't remember exactly when I felt movements with my first but it was definitely after the anomaly scan. As PPs have said, an anterior placenta can also cause the sensation to be lessened. I think in first pregnancy you expect the movements to be immediately obvious, they aren't, they are tiny flutters and it's possible to miss them. I am currently 21 weeks into my fourth pregnancy and I have to concentrate to feel any movements, they are really subtle at this stage. Try not to worry but if it's really making you anxious perhaps contact your midwife for a chat.

MarshmallowsOnToast · 13/03/2020 12:03

I didn't feel anything at all until 22 weeks.

bunnyrabbit93 · 13/03/2020 12:14

My placenta was in front in both pregnancies so didn't feel a lot but if I laid on my side and ate a chocolate bar I felt loads of kicks

Thanks for all your replies Smile

I think due to this being my first baby I overthink absolutely everything & with everyone else telling me that their baby's kicked/moved at 17 weeks I panicked that maybe something was wrong but it's really good to know that it's quite common.

I did try to to google bits but I try to stay away from googling too much - I like to hear other people's personal experiences as I find it can be more helpful sometimes :)

Hopefully I start to feel her moving soon, I'm so excited to feel the movements Grin

I do sometimes think when my stomach is rumbling that is could be the baby but even before I was pregnant I've always been a rumbly person lol

I haven't felt any "fluttery" feelings yet but sometimes I feel a pressure on my ribs? Could that be her or just general pregnancy aches/feelings?

The other morning i felt like there was a tiny ball in my stomach that bounced (that sounds really weird I know 😂) but it was for a a second or two and haven't felt anything since so I just thought it was something else ?

The tiny ball bounce sensation sounds like it could be it OP, why don't you try some chocolate or orange juice and lying down, see what you feel? It is really hard to tell in the early stages, esp when you haven't felt it before and don't know what to expect, but in a few weeks you will know when baby is on the move and in another month or two it will be unmistakable. Try not to worry too much, but if you do find yourself becoming very anxious contact your midwife, I'm sure she'd rather chat with you about it than have you work yourself up with worry.

Beau2020 · 13/03/2020 15:04

@hayb24 I'm the same weeks as you I think about 19+4 also a FTM. I noticed flutters from around 16 weeks but I kept thinking it was my stomach rumbling as I'm a really rumbly person too with IBS - I think the flutters feel the exact same!

Since 19 weeks I've been feeling very obvious kicks that feel like tightening sensations almost like when your eye does that annoying twitch? I only feel it when I'm concentrating in bed lying down. She usually reacts to music on my phone or drinking a hot drink if that helps!! I feel her more often now, hope you start to feel kicks soon x

Persipan · 13/03/2020 15:13

The early movements I felt were something like being pinged with a tiny, tiny elastic band. I also couldn't really distinguish the fact that they were internal sensations - it felt exactly the same as something external. I didn't feel kick-like movements until considerably later.

Hayb24 · 15/03/2020 12:21

Thanks for your replies Smile

I have felt the little bouncy ball feeling again a couple of times over the weekend and I think it is the baby as I can't pin point what else it could be. I think because I wasn't feeling any flutters or some other feelings other people described I just didn't think that what I was feeling could be her moving in there. Although, the bouncy ball feeling isn't very often, I felt it about twice on Saturday and have felt it again this morning.
I do get a pushing/pressure feeling in my ribs sometimes so maybe that's the baby stretching out? It's not really painful but it's a little bit of a ache and it's only about 3-5 seconds a time?

It's just hard to know what I'm feeling for as it's so new & knowing me I've been feeling it all along and just passing it off as something else 😂

Thank you all again for all of your replies, I feel a lot better now with everyone's reassurance and experiences. I hope everyone has enjoyed their weekends Grin

You won't feel the baby at your ribs yet, you will feel it down low by your bikini line.

Babyshine2020 · 15/03/2020 14:22

I'm also 19+2 and I haven't felt a thing. I do however have an anterior placenta so the chances are it'll be a few more weeks for me - they should be able to identify if this is the same for you at your scan.

Try not to worry x

EnglishRain · 15/03/2020 16:04

I'm 22 weeks and only started feeling baby around 21 weeks. I have an anterior placenta which is high, so only feel her really low down. It's nothing like flutters though! It's like a rolling sensation. I think because they are that bit bigger now you don't get the gentle butterflies thing.

MrsJaneyp · 15/03/2020 18:28

I'm a first time mum and 22w pregnant and haven't fel any kicks yet
I also have an anterior placenta so can't feel anything. It makes me really nervous and anxious that I can't feel anything so understand completely where you are coming from. I just keep in my head that 20-24 weeks is normal for a first time mum who don't have an anterior placenta

MonaLisaDoesntSmile · 15/03/2020 19:18

I got first movements at around 23 weeks. Went in for a scan and the lady kept on saying if I felt kicks as she saw them and nothing... Get checked if you're worried, but many ladies feel movements later.

RhymingRabbit3 · 15/03/2020 19:18

Stretching feeling in your ribs wouldnt be the baby yet. At this point your uterus is probably no higher up than your belly button.
