Boy clothing that doesn’t make me want to stick pins in my eyes?

I’ve found out I’m expecting a boy and already getting frustrated at how ugly and unimaginative so much ‘boy’ clothing is - dirty brown and green colours, everything has a truck on it and don’t get me started on the slogan t-shirts...

Of course, I’m sure I would be annoyed just as much by the heavily gendered girls clothing but the floral patterns appeal to me more than muddy looking crap marketed as for boys.

Just wondering how other Mums are getting around this? I would really like bright neutrals but there seems to be little of this about!

Morrison's have the nicest by far of the supermarket brands.

We've had a few bits from Blade and Rose.

Lotsofpots · 10/03/2020 16:32

Lindex is brilliant, as is Zara.
You can get great stuff if you have a good look in next, M&S, H&M, Sainsbury's. But you have to look past some awful slogan stuff.

Online kidly, Ando, little green radicals. Oh and boots do some great things for little ones that don't fall into the awful boy traps.

Fundays12 · 10/03/2020 16:36

I have 3 boys and the constant dinasours in everything are just dull plus the horrible green and dark blues. I like H&M, Primark are nice for baby stuff, Matalan can be good too. Lol I can’t be pleased though as equally I hate the whole pink, flowery overkill I would have been subjected to if one of my boys had been a girl.

YouForgetYourself · 10/03/2020 16:37

I've been fine with my boy until now. Loads of gorgeous boys things around so keep looking.

He's in 5-6 and just about managing to find some lovely, colourful childish clothing. From about 6/7 onwards boys clothes are grey, black or camo, with skulls on absolutely everything.

Dressing my girl has been nice as well (now in 2-3) but there are a LOT of sequins, frills and bloody unicorns.

babychampam · 10/03/2020 16:40

I've got boys and they've never worn dirty brown or green. Maybe you're looking in the wrong places?

Next, Debenhams, H&M, ted baker all do colourful clothes.

If you're looking for more traditional blues and whites then boutique brands like Emile et rose are your friend.

BeeyatchPlease · 10/03/2020 17:05

Yep, I loathe most boys' clothing too and I can't abide slogans and twee logos.
I get all DS' clothes in M&S, next, John Lewis, H&M, Joules and find Asda/Morrisons stuff ok too.

Bol87 · 10/03/2020 17:38

Zara & H&M are my fav for both boys & girls. I have girls & similarly, I hate (bright) pink, love hearts & slogans of any kind!

H&M can be really great value, while Zara is more expensive. I pick & choose nice pieces from there! Next & M&S don’t do too badly either, mid price range!

Use the supermarkets for your white vests (cheap), socks & neutrals. Again, often a case of pick & choose. I got two lovely pastel colour cardigans in Morrison’s today (yellow & mint green) but the rest of the clothes on offer were not my taste at all, covered in slogans & Peppa Pig! Similarly I got a fabulous mustard colour raincoat in Asda recently, it looks more expensive than it was. But on the whole, I find Asda a bit pink & slogan.

Just hunt around, there’s so much more choice out there than just army green!

TakeMeToYourLiar · 10/03/2020 17:43

Oh also https://beeboobuzz.co.uk/beeboobuzz do gorgeous soft cotton basics in plain rainbow colours.

essexanon · 10/03/2020 17:54

I feel your pain, I feel you can get cute girls clothes everywhere but boys stuff is just Boring.
I’ve found Zara, H&M and river island best with a few bits from primark x

BlusteryShowers · 10/03/2020 18:02

Zara and HM are the best bets. You'll be ok with baby stuff, it gets harder still when they get into the 'younger boys' range.

PregnantCat · 10/03/2020 18:22

Thank so much for the wonderful suggestions.

Slogan tees are my absolute nightmare, particular anything to do with ‘heartbreaker my or ‘trouble maker’...Hmm

Feel the pain RE the dressing the boys like teenagers. Let them be kids!

Another vote for Lindex! Lovely stuff and very affordable. Next is hit and miss but has some good bits, particularly sleepsuits/babygrows.

TakeMeToYourLiar · 10/03/2020 18:30

If you are on Instagram I'd suggest following the hashtags #brightcolourfulkids and #dresskids_likekids to get inspiration

doadeer · 10/03/2020 18:41

When my son was little (born Jan) he just lived in M&S baby grows and sometimes blade and rose leggings but I prefer more neutral stuff. By the summer he just wore a vest and shorts everyday from H&m it was so easy and comfortable for him. I've got a few tobias and the bear items which I like but I just go with the softest material.

sittingonacornflake · 10/03/2020 18:42

You need frugi! Duns! Maxamorra!

EmrysAtticus · 10/03/2020 18:49

My DS lives in:

Frugi
Little Green Radicals
Kite
Maxomorra
Moromini
Duns

Hate the sludge greens and browns of most of the supermarkets

Dazedandconfused28 · 10/03/2020 19:11

May not be your thing, but I love getting boys' bits on eBay, you can filter brands & get some really great stuff - I've ordered a lot of Next, M&S, Zara and Boden recently

Standrewsschool · 11/03/2020 07:16

m and s

Marks has a really nice Roald Dahl range of clothing in at the moment.

DappledThings · 11/03/2020 07:47

Sainsbury's and Boots do good stuff

mrsnec · 11/03/2020 07:56

Has anyone mentioned Peacocks yet. I love their children's clothes. Mine are pre-schoolers now and have both been wearing things from there since birth. It's mostly bright colours and often copies of designs you might see in Boden or Joules. Animal motifs and stripes etc not slogans.

Isthistrueor · 11/03/2020 09:02

H&M have lovely unisex clothing, the majority of baby clothing is unisex.

Scandi brands are great too like Duns, Polarn O Pyret, Maxomorra and smafolk.

Frugi and Toby tiger are colourful.

Isthistrueor · 11/03/2020 09:02

Zara have nice things too and Boots have colourful sleepsuits.

Gerdticker · 11/03/2020 09:09

I totally agree about boys clothing being dull -

I tend to buy boys trousers for my DD, because they are warmer and tougher than the thin tights/leggings only offered to girls!

But generally the girls ranges offer more exciting and brightly coloured tops & jumpers.

I ignore the boy/girl label to be honest and just buy whatever looks funky - I like kids wearing fun bright colours, in practical fabrics that mean they can run and jump and climb :)

BikeRunSki · 11/03/2020 09:10

DS is 11.ivenrrn fighting this battle a long time!

Next, H&M, Boots,Toby Tiger, John Lewis, Boden are all worth a rummage.

Chocolateandcarbs · 11/03/2020 09:18

Bluezoo at Debenhams - attractive, washes well, well made, I like it and so does my son!
