I'm making myself feel sick now over the risks of runny egg yolk.
Are they safe in pregnancy?
So many mixed reviews online 😭

You can have them even raw as long as lion stamped - see nhs advise in picture if the attachment works!

The UK flock has been declared salmonella free.
An average egg from the supermarket will be fine, even with a runny yolk.

This was not the case a few years ago, hence the online discrepancy.

There my own chicken eggs so not red lion.
I mean if they had Salmonella I'd no by there health? Or not?

Agree with both previous posters - have as many runny eggs as you like! I had them all through my pregnancy with DD and she’s fine. Doing the same for this pregnancy too.

PestyMachtubernahme · 09/03/2020 10:31

Have your chickens had a salmonella vaccine?

I'd buy eggs, just to be sure.

ClaraLane · 09/03/2020 10:31

Have your chickens been vaccinated?

pollypocketrocket · 09/03/2020 10:32

No 😢

In that case I’d either a) get them vaccinated so the eggs can be eaten by the baby when bigger or b) buy eggs that are lion stamped

Vaccinate your chickens or buy your eggs in. Then eat as many runny eggs as you like. Why wouldn't you have vaccinated your chickens already?

pollypocketrocket · 09/03/2020 10:43

Iv had them years & never been ill off them. Wasn't even aware of vaccine.
I'm just suffering such severe anxiety i didn't even realise they could be of threat. I'm very upset now

Please dont stress yourself about it......call the midwife and explain what you have here.

BadCatDirtyCat · 09/03/2020 10:50

Don't be upset. I only realised a few weeks ago that the lovely organic local eggs buy are not lion stamped - doh! Now I've realised I've switched to different eggs for now as I like them runny. It's a shame that you'll have to miss out on your own eggs until you've either had your baby or had them vaccinated (or just eat them hard) but it's really not the end of the world. (Btw I am very jealous that you have chickens! My family had them when I was a kid and I loved them but no room/time now Sad)

pollypocketrocket · 09/03/2020 11:08

I'm just going to hope all will be fine & not eat again.

I hope because iv never been ill off them for all this time they will be clear of salmonella & they don't come into contact with any other chickens.

As long as they have the lion logo yeah. I’ve had loads of runny eggs, I’m fine.

WorriedButterfly · 09/03/2020 13:13

Hi OP I may be wrong and corrected, but I don't think you have anything to worry about. You should avoid salmonella when pregnant as it would not be good for you or your babe, but if you have not had it then there is no harm done, I believe it's the same for listeria and toxoplasma, unless they present themselves then you don't have anything to worry about - they are not festering away in the background. As for the chucks maybe the vaccine would be worth investigating.

Ithoughtyouwere · 09/03/2020 13:23

I think chickens can catch salmonella from seagulls if they fly over and eat their poo. I’d recommend getting them vaccinated for the future (and so the baby could have the eggs without risk too).

However re the pregnancy concern, it’s not a risk for baby it’s more that salmonella in pregnancy can be a lot more severe than if caught otherwise.
