Okay asking for trouble here but what do people think of the name Leonard? can be shortened to Lenny or Len depending on age. It has family connections and I like it but I made the mistake of telling someone at work and she said "oh I really hate it"

Does it sound dreadfully old fashioned or has it got weird connections or something? I suppose you could think Lenny Henry, I was thinking more Leonard Cohen

grateful for any opinions even if they are yuck I hate it too!

leonard as full name, shortened to Leo is nice.

NappiesGalore · 07/09/2007 20:05

i have to know what you named her Kog

Kog · 07/09/2007 20:20

Oh no - if I tell you, you might spit your coffee at the computer screen, cartoon style. And then someone might come out and tell me how awful they think it is and I don't need that! Besides, anyone with even a passing aquaintance with me would then know who I am. She's definitely the only one with her name.

To satisfy your curiosity, think Gwynneth Paltrow - it's not 'Apple' but I suppose it's that sort of name. It's a very pretty name.

belgo · 07/09/2007 20:22

Strawberry?

belgo · 07/09/2007 20:23

Peach?
Apricot?

belgo · 07/09/2007 20:25

I knew a girl called Cherry. Very pretty.

katendmom · 07/09/2007 20:25

Hey, she's your daughter, you're proud of her and love her name, why wouldn't you tell the world? You're her mom and it means you know best.

When I had my DS, we wanted to find a name that would be easily pronounced in USA but had Russian origins. We chose "Danneel" but in everyday life we call him "Dannik."

For a while people were telling us that his name would forever be mispronounced and hard to remember. Not at all! Even his little 2 year old buddies in his daycare can easily pronounce it.

belgo · 07/09/2007 20:29

Kog -If I promise not to spill my coffee will you tell me?

ScoobyDooooo · 07/09/2007 20:29

I like Lenny or Leo but not leonard to old manish.

NappiesGalore · 07/09/2007 22:54

i normally like little old man names - hey, 2 of mine are called Archie and Gus fgs!

Leonard however, reminds me of an ex who i nearly married and am very releived not to have done because we are soooooooo different it would never have worked. hes not a bad person, but the nearmiss-ness of it makes me shudder.

but thats hardly going to occur to mnaypeople, now is it??

if you like it, go for it.

everychocolatehasaskinnylining · 07/09/2007 23:01

I like Leonard
I like the tweedy old fusty names
My favourite name being Hector - if that's anything to go by
Whizzed through the other suggestions and do not really like Lennon as it's trying too hard to be cool and laidback - didn't one of the Gallagher brother's name his son that?

Go Old Skool with Leonard. Plus I am a fan of Cohen.....Suzanne.. tum tee tum.

kindersurprise · 07/09/2007 23:32

I love Leonard, a friend of mine called her DS Leonard and he is such a little cutie. We sometimes call him Leo, but most of the time he is Leonard.

If you like the name, go for it. If Jordan can call her DD Princess Tiame (is that right) then there is a lot of leeway at the moment. Anyone who says after the birth that the chosen name is not nice is very rude and hurtful.

WestCountryLass · 07/09/2007 23:34

Tis funny as my DS is called Leo but we keep calling him Leonard and it suits him

Jackstini · 07/09/2007 23:38

He could use Leonard in full when he's old or if he grows up to become a judge or something.
I like Leo for a little boy, or maybe Lennie? (Although now I've written it, it does remind of studying 'Of Mice & Men' at school....)

professorplum · 08/09/2007 00:07

I love leonard. My ds has an old fashioned name and some people do raise their eyebrows a bit but they can f* off because their kids are called 'Josh and Emily' or 'Jack and Sophie' or something similar like every other kid in the class.

(before you all jump on me I think that those names are perfectly fine, I just don't want a top 10 name for my baby)

Kog. I'll tell you mine if you tell me yours

Kittiwake · 09/09/2007 17:30

Thanks for this kind of backs up what I though that it's a great name in a lovely old fashioned way but that it does divide people somewhat.

MMJ Leonard Rossiter was great and you've made me remember my early crush on Richard Beckensdale mmmmm .

Everychocolate I also like a lot of tweedy fusty names Hector is lovely. I agree would never use Lennon don't like the connotations either John or Liam Gallagher wise.

Jackstini think this is the root of my not sureness about the name, it also reminds me of that book which I hated reading at school

Hmmm will have to have more of a think, this name business is mighty tricky - other names in the running are Vincent, Dylan (DH's suggestion) Ivor and Gruff (we live in Wales) as you say Professorplum just want something a little different

FrannyandZooey · 09/09/2007 17:34

I kind of like Leonard

it looks great on the page, doesn't it?

hmm what about Leonard Nimoy though?

berolina · 09/09/2007 17:37

Leonard, Leo and variants are very popular over here in Germany just now.

I like Leonard (has me thinking of Mr Cohen too ) and Leo, but not Lenny, and Len still less.

EllieG · 09/09/2007 17:37

My Dad's middle name is Leonard. He's lovely but have always thought it is quite old-fashioned tbh. But there's nothing wrong with that.

berolina · 09/09/2007 17:38

(oh, btw, we are about to name our ds2 (when he arrives) a very unusual and 'old-fashioned' name, to which I am expecting quite a few reactions)

EllieG · 09/09/2007 17:41

Didn't mean to be rude, don't think old-fashioned bad necessarily, hope not offended.

berolina · 09/09/2007 17:46

Not offended in the slightest (if you meant me) (Nothing can top ds's godfather having told us that the name we have chosen for ds2 is 'very Prussian' )

mytwopenceworth · 09/09/2007 17:50

I think that it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks, only matters what you (and the father) think. But since you did ask....... it's not one I would choose for my kids. I don't like it.

Niecie · 09/09/2007 18:11

I was thinking about Leonard Nimoy too so I kind of associate it with Dr Spook.

Lenny makes me think of the cheeky boy at the back of the class who is always in trouble. Don't know why - maybe we had one at school but I don't remember for sure.

MalikaAndMungo · 09/09/2007 21:23

I called my son Mungo (it's a family name we want to revive) and my DH is Scottish. But you would not believe the reactions we get! The most recent was "Oh GOOD for you!" as if it was the bravest thing in the world!!! He is patron saint of Glasgow but everyone thinks it's a made-up name!
