Positive stories about pregnancy at 39

Hi,

I'm only 5+6 and since it's my first baby and we were TTC for 1.5 years I've been very anxious.

I recently found a miscarriage reassurance calculator that calmed me hugely and (along with steadily doubling HCG) I actually had a few optimistic, peaceful days Smile

Last night though I came across a website which said my increased chance of miscarriage in the first trimester was 40% & spent the night bawling to my husband.

I've read some places that 35-39 it's 25% but as I'm right at the end of the bracket it's hard to take on value.

Can any of you give me positive stories about pregnancy at 39? I'm starting to feel the odds are really not in my favour & it's sending anxiety through the roof...

Hello

I'm not sure I can give you any stats to reassure you but I can give you my experience. I was a month away from being 38 when I conceived last September. It came as a shock in so much as it's my first pregnancy, I have PCOS so had no idea about my fertility, I used to weigh double my body weight and didn't even have periods but lost over 11 stone so they started to come back regularly. Also, my DH had his vasectomy reversed in April last year so we didn't know how all those different issues would combine.

I fell pregnant on the first month I saw a positive on an ovulation stick.

I just couldn't believe it. I felt so lucky to just get pregnant that I felt that if I did lose it, at least I knew I could conceive.

Then I had a little bleed at 6 weeks and another at 7 weeks. Doctors told me that miscarriage is about 1 in 4 and that it could very well happen. I was scanned at the EPU and by 7 weeks we saw baby's little heartbeat. The stats for miscarriage reduce drastically once you've seen a HB, but obviously it still does remain a small risk.

I'm now 27 weeks with a healthy baby (according to all the screening and scans I've had) and, although I've had 3 more little bleeds, I found out yesterday that I have an ectropy on my cervix which has caused the bleeds. So it's absolutely nothing to do with my baby!

Lots can go wrong in pregnancy, but the odds are in your favour and usually they go right. It's a time where you're consumed with worry and anxiety (I still am!) but your body is amazing and just knows what to do.

Wishing you a happy and healthy pregnancy x

I'm 37 and 20 weeks pregnant, haven't had any issues so far. I have a thyroid disease which is well managed but earlier in the pregnancy I read my chances of an early miscarriage were significantly increased because of my thyroid.

It seems most women between 35-39 have normal, healthy pregnancies. You have to keep reminding yourself that the odds are on your side x

I fell pregnant aged 39, I'm sat here watching my 11 yr old and 8 yr old happily playing.

Be positive, look after yourself, I know lots of older mothers! Congratulations! Grin

Hello! I got my BFP at the age of 39 and gave birth to my lovely DD, who is now 4 months old, two weeks after my 40th birthday Smile I had had three miscarriages and we were planning to give up TTC when I turned 40, but we have our beautiful little miracle now! Try to stay positive, I know it's hard Flowers

It’s nice to read some positives from ladies who’ve had babies and been pregnant in their late 30’s and beyond!
I’m 37 and very very cautiously pregnant (4-5 weeks) after miscarrying in January.
This is my 5th pregnancy as I already have 3 children, but the last time I was pregnant I was only 32.
Everything seems much scarier now even though it’s only 5 years on!

Had my first at 41 and due in July with no2. I'll be 43!
Congratulations!

I got pregnant just before my 40th birthday.. I’m not a fit person at all... chronic high blood pressure, morbidly obese.. my beautiful and perfect 4 month old baby is asleep next to me as I write Smile

I found out I was 5mths pregnant with dd2, 23 years after dd1 was born at 38.
It was a complete shock I had absolutely no symptoms.
I had a very quick labour, dd was born on her due date.
She's 4 now and definitely the best thing to happen to us.
Congratulations.

I had one at 39 and my second at 41.

I was a total basket case worrying about miscarriage though, it's only natural. I really scared myself silly with #1. Then with #2 I was so convinced I had a missed MC that my lovely GP actually sent me for a reassurance scan at 9 weeks which helped psychologically.

In the end I didn't have any bleeds or scares or anything tbh. Went like clockwork.

I'm 37 myself (pregnant with my first), but my friend had a baby at 39. He was born prematurely due to preeclampsia, but this can happen at any age. He's now a gorgeous perfectly healthy toddler!

FraterculaArctica · 08/03/2020 16:18

I've had DC at 36, 38 and 41. I'm very lucky I know but never had any pregnancy losses or significant problems, so it can still be plain sailing at this age.

Thank you so much for all your replies and these uplifting, reassuring stories. They've helped so much. As has just thinking of every day that passes as a day the pregnancy getting stronger and finally having some nausea arrive (never thought I'd be glad to see that happen but I'm cherishing my pukey feels!). Thank you all again Flowers
