Hi everyone,

I have my scan next week and my partner is coming with me, but I really want my mum to be there with me too. She lives 3 hours away and is coming to stay to be with me so would love her to actually see baby.

I understand that whilst they initially check everything is ok that it will probably just me me and my partner, but will she be able to come in and see after?

Thanks in advance x

I took my partner and my 14 year old daughter and was told only 1 person was allowed in!! They let her in in the last 2 mins to reveal the sex though.

At mine it specifically said only one adult should be there and no children. I've had 5 scans and each letter has said the same. Maybe if you ask, but in our hospital they're so busy I don't think they really have the time. X

I think it totally depends on the hospital and who is working that day. I plan to take my parents and dh to mine as they're visiting then anyway. My hope is that at least my mum can pop in and see.

I've been reading people's posts etc across different forums and it seems that some is fine and some is big no-no. You could maybe phone ahead and check or play it by ear on the day (which is what I plan to do).

Best to phone them up and ask.

They wouldn't have allowed it at my hospital. If you can a private scan would be lovely so you could have lots more time and in my experience better pictures etc.

GaaaaarlicBread · 05/03/2020 16:43

At private ones you can have up to 4 people but in hospital ones only one person and no children

Best to find out first - but this is a medical procedure and not a jolly day out.

ConstantlyPanicking · 05/03/2020 16:49

I actually just looked at my letter (should have done this in the first place) and it says:

"One accompanying adult is permitted in the scan room for the duration of the scan. This is to allow the sonographer to concentrate on your scan without unnecessary distractions. Children, family members or friends will be called in after all the checks have been completed."

Guess that answers my question!!

Thank you all x

It should say on your appointment letter what is allowed, my hospital allows 2 people and no children under 12.

I didn't realise this was a no-no! I had my 20 week scan a few weeks ago at a hospital in the East Mids, a friend said she'd taken her DP and DM and it didn't even cross my mind you might not be allowed more than one, I absolutely loved having my mum there it meant a lot.

Looks like it varies according to hospital so see if you can find out.

ConstantlyPanicking · 05/03/2020 16:53

Christmastree that's exactly why I want her there. She lives so far away (in East Mids actually!) and I don't get to see her often. She is worried herself about not being able to be as involved with the baby as my MIL is so thought this would be special for her x

You're not allowed in my local hospital, and considering I've had bad news at 3 scans I'd actually not have wanted anyone but my DH there while I dealt with the options and facts given to us.

Isthistrueor · 05/03/2020 17:00

They’re medical scans, it’s not a spectator sport so only one adult is allowed. They allow children and other adults in briefly at the end if everything is ok.

Isthistrueor · 05/03/2020 17:02

You can book a private scan and have as many people view as you wish.

Lunafortheloveogod · 05/03/2020 17:05

Ours is one adult but is laid back on kids in a buggy. Obviously too young to be at school for the appointments and not old enough to sit in the waiting room kind of age.

Private scan or have her come to the next one?

Frenchw1fe · 05/03/2020 17:17

We gave my dil and ds a lift to their scan and were going to wait in the waiting room. As they went in my dil asked if I could go with them and they said yes.
It was amazing to sit next to my son as he and dil were told they were having a boy.
I made sure to keep quiet and let it be their moment.

boringadvice · 05/03/2020 20:02

Phone them op, my letters have said the same thing. But I unexpectedly had to take 2DC and I was prepared for DH to sit in the waiting room with them but they the sonographer said don't be daft bring them in.

b0nnieN · 05/03/2020 20:27

My hospital allowed both my OH and 5yo son in the scan. The sonographer was so lovely and pointed out the baby's body parts so my son felt very involved in the appointment. I checked if it was ok to bring him to the next scan and she said he's more than welcome. So it sounds like it's really dependent on your local hospital as many of the other mums have said, there can be strict rules at some.
