Newborn sleep

Just wondering what do newborns sleep in? I'm due in Spring so won't be super cold. Is a sleepsuit and blanket ok if it's a blanket with the little holes in?

Depends on the weather/your house temp. You might want a short sleeved vest under the sleepsuit if it’s not overly warm..

A cellular blanket (with the holes) is good for regulating temperature as it’s cotton, we sometimes doubled them up again if I felt it wasn’t that warm! We quite quickly moved onto swaddle product called Swaddle Up to try stop the blooming startle reflex some babies have! They are noted as 1tog & I’d say like a thick T-shirt material. In warner weather, we just used that. On cooler days, we used that & a blanket.

I know it seems quite daunting but you soon work out the temp your baby likes to be! They’ll let you know if they are cold as they won’t sleep! Always better to fall on the side of too cool though, than too warm!

We used babygro and blankets in the newborn base and then later we are using babygro and sleeping bags.

I swaddled my summer babies in big muslins (with arms out) for the first few weeks, then moved to 1tog sleeping bags.

Ours slept in a vest and nightie swaddled in a cellular blanket until he was about three months old I think, and then we put him in a little sleeping bag.

I really recommend the nighties (I think John Lewis calls them bundlers and M&S does them too) rather than a sleepsuit. They're long so cover their feet, but they make night time nappy changes so much easier.

Had our DS in September and he slept in babygrow and wrapped in a woolen blanket. Swaddled with arms out. This seemed to work ok.

In spring I expect a sleeveless vest a d a babygrow would be sufficient. I go buy the rule of whatever I am wearing plus one layer.

So if I just have PJ's then he has sleep suit and a vest.

He now sleeps in a sleep bag and it's brilliant as he can't kick his covers off and then wake up as he is cold.

All the best in your pregnancy.

Apologies, my grammar is awful. Typed way to quickly.

We had our baby in late March and he slept in short sleeved vest and sleep suit with a cellular blanket. Like PP we also moved to swaddle products and sleeping bags pretty quickly. The ideal temp for the room the baby sleeps in is 16-20c and the gro company has some good guidelines for number or layers depending on room temp.

Never used blankets. Found it far easier to just use sleeping bags (although I think there's possibly a minimum size/weight if you have a small newborn.

I've seen a few good pictures shared that show what to wear for different temperatures. Will see if I can find one.

Here's one. If you Google images for 'dressing baby for bed' you'll find more.

@Peanut55 we gave up on the 'one more layer' as, for example, last night in bed I had thick PJs on with a (single) electric blanket, next to my naked husband! - we never worked out how to use that to decide what baby should wear Grin
