Pregnancy & Coronavirus

Hi ladies,

Anyone else concerned about getting the coronavirus whilst pregnant?! I'm 11 weeks and so paranoid about getting it. There is barely any advice for pregnant mothers and I work in a college so I'm exposed to germs all the time! I just feel like the NHS aren't giving us any proper advice for expecting mothers and it has me so worried. Our immune systems are lowered and I'm so terrified of catching it, however as there's no advice, I can't just stop coming to work.

Please tell me I'm not the only one worrying about this? I've taken to carrying around my hand sanitiser everywhere I go...obviously using soap and water where possible.

@Fantasiaa - you must be a really sad and bitter person to read a whole thread simply for the purposes of commenting on grammar.

To gain pleasure (and no doubt a tingly fanny) from posting such utter unnecessaries from behind the safety of your keyboard just serves to highlight that you are no doubt a very lonely woman. Now jog on and go find something useful to do with your day (perhaps combing one of your many cats’ fur?!)

I'm absolutely petrified. 8 weeks and work in a hospital!! Same as you - even a fever could cause problems or miscarriage and I can't even buy paracetamol as everyone around me has panic bought it - so incredibly selfish. I'm also really worried if the healthcare system gets overwhelmed and staff are off work myself and my baby won't get good maternity care. If it peaks in October (when my baby is due) will I have a safe and fully staffed place to deliver? Feel very ignored as a pregnant healthcare worker. No advice because it's unknown not because it's safe for us and baby.

Hi everyone,

I saw this post on Instagram yesterday so thought I would share. ITs from Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG)

obgymum on Instagram is also a good account to follow, she had posted about this and how I found it 😊

And here's a link where you can register your email for updates to be sent. (Or keep a look on their Instagram )

It says updates in the coming days so hopefully some pregnancy related advice isn't far away.

That is really useful @baby456 thank you!!

namesneeded · 06/03/2020 09:19

I am 36 weeks, and having growth scans and Doppler each week. I asked this morning during an appointment what would happen and I had to self isolate, and the consultant told me that it's likely I'd be kept in the hospital in the 'corona
Isolation' section so all scans and Doppler would come to me, instead of me coming to them.

@baby456 thank you! Have signed up!

2020babym · 06/03/2020 10:38

@burntpinky thank you. It's been a v tough few weeks but the doctors and consultants etc are more positive for the baby's outcome now. He's growing and doing well, but will need surgery on a couple of things when he's born. But there was a time where we told he wouldn't survive at all and that alone has changed my perspective on everything forever. X

burntpinky · 06/03/2020 11:07

@2020babym - so glad the news is more positive! I can totally see how that would massively change perspective on everything. Hope all goes well x

Niffler1988 · 06/03/2020 11:33

Don't even engage with that grammar troll...ignore and she will go back to her sad little life.

It's nice to hear from a GP on here and other medical professionals, it seems we all have the same concerns!

@baby456 thank you for that, it's really useful! I just hope that we get some answers, more for our own sanity!

@Fantasiaa i’m not a fan of poor grammar either but there’s a time and a place, I bet you are a joy to meet in real life (!)

www.mirror.co.uk/science/coronavirus-pregnancy-doctors-explain-expecting-21619919

Just read this article. It didn’t make me feel any better, sorry if it further alarms others... I feel a bit doom and gloom about it all at the moment.
Not sure what measures to take - stop commuting to London (work from home?) but then my husband does anyway, so what’s the point?

Viletta · 06/03/2020 14:17

Hope this gives some reassurance:

Previous studies have shown that SARS during pregnancy is associated with a high incidence of adverse maternal and neonatal complications, such as spontaneous miscarriage, preterm delivery, intrauterine growth restriction, application of endotracheal intubation, admission to the intensive care unit, renal failure, and disseminated intravascular coagulopathy.9, 11 However, pregnant women with COVID-19 infection in the present study had fewer adverse maternal and neonatal complications and outcomes than would be anticipated for those with SARS-CoV-1 infection. Although a small number of cases was analysed and the findings should be interpreted with caution, the findings are mostly consistent with the clinical analysis done by Zhu and colleagues12 of ten neonates born to mothers with COVID-19 pneumonia. The clinical characteristics reported in pregnant women with confirmed COVID-19 infection are similar to those reported for non-pregnant adults with confirmed COVID-19 infection in the general population and are indicative of a relatively optimistic clinical course and outcomes for COVID-19 infection compared with SARS-CoV-1 infection.13, 14 www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(20)30365-2/fulltext

6000choccybiccies · 06/03/2020 14:27

Surely the recent study is for Mums and babies near term though. There hasn't been enough time to know effects earlier in pregnancy. But thank you for posting that and hope it reassured those further along.

Viletta · 06/03/2020 15:07

@6000choccybiccies yes and the sample is very small obviously but at least it looks like it's behaving not as badly as sars from existing evidence.

IslayBrigid · 06/03/2020 15:16

I'm also worried! But it's reassuring to see posts about facts and links to information - thank you. I am 15 weeks today. I feel very anxious about it, I commute from Bucks to London most days and being on the train then tube is horrible, I find myself in a bad mood at work, yesterday I got a stress headache and had to leave early. I don't know at what point to start working from home in earnest. None of my colleagues are pregnant so don't think they really understand my worry; they are being compassionate but I also feel silly/over the top. I also have quite an international job which doesn't help; thankfully I don't have to travel any time soon, but I work around people who travel a lot.
I think it's clearly going to get worse before it gets better, I really hope it's true that it isn't really worse for pregnant women than for the average healthy adult :( :(

It's all a bit misreable! The pregnancy hormones and ups and downs can't be helping with the anxiety I'm sure!

FeelingBeautiful · 06/03/2020 21:37

Just saw this, I don't know if it helps or not, but there's a paragraph in here that suggests most pregnant women fair ok as far as i can tell. The more cases, the more people are talking about I don't want to take any chances and will talk to my GP on Monday about signing off work for a couple of weeks. My I'm over-reacting but I'm getting pretty nervous for my baby

burntpinky · 07/03/2020 10:42

I’m only 5 weeks and almost thinking if this doesn’t stick it might be for the best because I don’t want anything to happen at a later stage. That said, my GP thinks it will really hit us this coming October and I’ll be due 7 Nov so might be better if this DOES stick as from current data there seems to be less risk in later pregnancy. But I’m petrified.

Its very sad to read the advice about separating mum and baby at birth and not breastfeeding if mum has coronavirus.
Really worried about getting through trimester 1 + 2 safely, but then also worried about state of healthcare and second wave in October when I'm due. Feel a bit let down by work just telling us to carry on as normal too (NHS)

Let's be civil, we can all have different opinions. @Fantasiaa just mentioned that her choice is not to be anxious which is her choice. I think the comments back were far too aggressive. I get that people are worried but let's be kind to each other.

Viletta · 07/03/2020 14:00

@burntpinky it's really overwhelming especially with the little real data we've got. I would raise your concerns with the midwife or 111, they have a special line for people who are worried and have questions. I think having a medical opinion might help with anxiety.
