Do I really need a steriliser?

FTM. I'm planning on breastfeeding and not planning on using a dummy or expressing - do I still need a steriliser? I can't think of anything else I'd need one for!

I breastfed but I had to express and give my baby milk via a bottle (this wasn't planned, due to low weight) and I didn't have a steriliser so it was abit of a pain.

I would get one, especially if you do need to express at some point.

I think the issue is between things that need to be sterile and things that need to be sterilised.

If a nipple shield, a dummy or a spoon drops on the floor three foot from the cat litter you want all the bacteria on it, killed. Most effective way to do that is to sterilise it.

That is different to equipment for formula that literally has to be sterile.

No ! If you need to you can always use a big pot of boiling water.

Maybe get some microwave sterilising bags just in case?

KittenVsBox · 02/03/2020 21:52

No, for your plan you dont need to be able to sterilise.

Some Other countries don't recommend sterilising, but I don't know why. I wouldn't buy one now, it's easy enough to go and buy one later if you need one.

Am I the only one who never sterilised a dummy? Also stopped sterilising bottles at 6 month and she was FF. Shes 3 this Friday! I must just be lucky 🤷🏻‍♀️😏

I got the tommee tippee Manual breast pump which cone with a mini microwaveable steriliser. I didn't use it all that much, but did come in handy at the start when baby struggled with weight loss and I needed to pump some milk for top ups.

3 kids, never used a steriliser. As long as the BF goes okay you will be fine.

When dgc was a baby DIL became seriously ill and was hospitalised for several weeks and we looked after dgc. We bought a single bottle travel steriliser which could be used in the microwave or with tablets and cold water. It was a godsend and didn't take up much space at all. Ds and DIL also borrowed it when they went away for a week as it was easy to find room in the car for it. Maybe something like that on standby?

Amanduh · 02/03/2020 22:13

I had one for bottles at the beginning, Until we moved on to mam and they just need a microwave. So if you use bottles then yes and if you don’t then no! Bypassing it this time with solely mam bottles. Never sterilised a dummy in my life! Just get some tablets in case there something pops up 🤷🏼‍♀️

The steriliser microwave bags are really good. Handy to have, dont take up space and only take a minute or two

caoraich · 02/03/2020 22:19

I bought a microwave steriliser when I was pregnant which I never used.

We bought dummies but they came in little steriliser boxes and so did my manual breast pump which was very handy

It's the sort of thing you could Amazon prime if you decided you needed one so I definitely wouldn't bother buying while pregnant

NameChange30 · 02/03/2020 22:24

Nope. I breastfed. I did also express milk and we sterilised the pump parts and bottle in boiling water. Well DH did, it was his job Grin

okiedokieme · 02/03/2020 22:24

No, I didn't get mine out of the packaging (mum bought it!)
