Do bigger babies come earlier?

Hi All!

So after my 36 week scan, I found out my baby is likely to be big. I have a consultants appointment this week. Does anyone have any experience of this? Will I be offered an induction? Will I be offered a csection? Will I be allowed to go into labour naturally? Is an alongside birthing unit out of the question now?

I'd really appreciate any wise words of experience from anyone

Thank you!

My cousin just had a big baby. The midwife told her only 5% of babies born that size. He was 9 pounds something and well past his due date. Finally had to have a c-section after 30 hours as he wasn't coming. His finger nails were so long. He's a cutie but definitely overcooked little love ❤️ she wasn't offered anything re induction / planned c section. Think it depends if the circumstance 🤷🏽‍♀️

YouJustDoYou · 02/03/2020 17:50

Mine was 6 days late.

flowerstar19 · 02/03/2020 17:52

Sorry my 10lb firstborn was 11 days late! But no one realised he was so big until he was born!

bobisbored · 02/03/2020 17:54

My 9lb 12oz baby was 12 days late. My midwife told me it's easier to push the big ones out. I knew I was having a big baby and I was shitting myself but it was fine. Honestly!

My niece was 11lb 1oz 😬 she was 15 days late to be fair and no one suspected she was going to be that big until she arrived.
My baby is plotting very big and always has done, they just keep monitoring her and I have another scan this week at 38 weeks so I guess I'll find out if they want to discuss any induction options etc. But I don't think they do unless they are actually concerned which they haven't been so far with my little one, they just want to keep an eye they say.

You may be offered induction or c section, you dont have to accept. Ultrasound scans are notoriously bad at estimating weights of baby at birth. For example, mine was estimated to be 9lb but was less than 7lb.

Flutteringsatlast · 02/03/2020 18:25

9.3 was 3 days early.
Less than 3 hour birth.

sar302 · 02/03/2020 18:46

Mine was 9lb5 and born at 41 + 5. He was a bit overcooked bless him.

Figgygal · 02/03/2020 18:48

How big is big?

DS1 9lb 4 13 days late
Ds2 9lb 3 10 days late

Friends baby 10lb 3 induced and c section 2 weeks late

So probably not

velocitygirl7 · 02/03/2020 18:54

Not in my experience. I'm tiny and had a very fat looking 9lb boy 2 weeks late. I also had a massive placenta, my midwife was showing it to other staff Grin

MyHeartIsBrokeButIHaveSomeGlue · 02/03/2020 19:01

Not necessarily. My DD was two weeks late and 8lb 5oz. My DS was a week early (planned section) and was 9lb 4oz.

NoRoomInBed · 02/03/2020 19:02

No exactly massive but my 8lb 2oz boy (big for my babies) was only an hour birth. My littlest ones were 6 hours

DonnaDarko · 02/03/2020 19:03

8lb 11oz

Two weeks late, I had to be induced and then I was in labour for 24 hours.

carly2803 · 02/03/2020 19:04

no. almost 10lb baby, natural. a week late

fucking hurt like but i got over it in 0.5 seconds. :)

GrumpyHoonMain · 02/03/2020 19:07

Bigger babies (ie above the 99th percentile) tend to come later that’s why it tends to be more dangerous for both the baby and the mother. This is because they often come hand in hand with weak Or inefficient pelvic floor / obesity / being unfit

pigdogridesagain · 02/03/2020 19:10

I had a 9lb at 39 weeks, 8lb 12oz at 38 weeks, 8lb 3oz at 37 weeks and a 6lb 11oz 35 weeker.

Phillipa12 · 02/03/2020 19:23

All mine were sections, first was an emcs then 3 elcs.
Dc1 weighed 9lb at 40 weeks
Dc2 weighed 10.9lbs at 38 weeks
Dc3 weighed 9.14lbs at 39 weeks
Dc4 weighed 11.6lbs at 38 weeks.

scrivette · 02/03/2020 19:23

My heaviest was the latest, 9 lb 6 at 40 weeks.

Mydogatemypurse · 02/03/2020 19:25

Mine didnt.

mnahmnah · 02/03/2020 19:32

My second was 10lb 11oz an two days overdue. Nobody knew he was going to be big though, I measured spot-on throughout. So luckily I was never considered for induction or c-section. Natural birth with no issues. Normal length labour. Everyone was shocked he was so big! So please don’t worry that it will be a traumatic birth or more difficult. It can be absolutely fine.

RandomMess · 02/03/2020 19:32

Mine were all evicted by induction at 42 weeks...

maa1992 · 02/03/2020 19:35

My baby was 10lb 1oz I had more frequent scans due to his estimated size, we had him by ECS a week before his due date.

I had no braxton hicks or false alarms, honesty don't think he'd of budged 😂

SarahD19 · 02/03/2020 19:36

Absolutely no correlation between birthweight and how soon they are born imho. My friends with tiny babies had them early or late. My baby was 9.8lb (98th centile) and born 40+1. I’m 5ft 3 and normally just over 8 stone, so not big - and my bump was small.

WinterCat · 02/03/2020 19:37

I’ve had four and they have been in order from lightest to heaviest in order of what gestation they were born. So earliest is lightest and latest is heaviest.

zaffa · 02/03/2020 19:39

I was told I was to have an almost ten pounder at term according to the scans - I was offered an induction but had a c section in the end as the induction failed but they'd broken my waters. Baby was a respectable 8&1/2 pounds and she was not ready to be born.

Don't believe everything they say - they told me the placenta was failing according to scans and the midwife looked at it after birth and said it was very healthy.

In the end though, my DD is here safe and sound and it was pretty easy so I can't really complain. (Born beginning of December)
