(lack of) pregnancy weight gain

hi

just wondering what other people's thoughts / experiences are with weight gain?

i'm 19+1 with twins and currently weigh about 5.2lbs less than i did at my booking appt. my bump is very much in evidence, and i've had a pretty symptomatic pregnancy with hip/pelvis pain, tiredness etc. i have suffered with morning sickness since around 9weeks but not debilitatingly so - I am sick pretty much once a day when i get up and i guess my appetite is smaller than it used to be so i'm eating more sensible portions. but i haven't felt that I have massively been struggling to eat or anything, though i've tried to reduce my carb intake as i'm a bit worried about GD.

I started out at a very high weight (BMI over 40 :( i am short and round) so obviously i am keen to keep weight gain minimal, but i've recently seen some stuff online (always dangerous) which indicates that even with an obese starting weight i should have gained a lot more by now and am suddenly feeling a bit anxious about it. I haven't been weighed since my booking appt i think - everything looked fine at the12week scan, but the midwife didn't listen for heartbeats at the 16week and I haven't had any other touchpoints.

I have my 20week scan & my first FMU appointment next week so hoping for some reassurance then. but just wondered how anyone else - particularly overweight/obese and/or multiples found their weight gain ?

thanks,
S

I started with a obese BMI of like 48 I think? I’m 36+4 with a singleton and have just this week hit my pre-pregnancy weight.

I wasn’t sick at all in 1st trimester, just lots of nausea and I think I unconsciously ate better once I got some appetite back half way through 2nd trimester. I eat masses now to make up for it, but again only when I’m hungry! I was also really worried about GD ... although my need to eat mash potato all the time didn’t help that fear... so that probably contributed to food choices too. But I avoided it so I’m happy!

I’d mentioned it to my midwife at my 16 week and 24 week check up and she said as long as I’m not purposely restricting my food, and was eating when hungry/able to then she wasn’t concerned. She also said baby would take what he wanted anyway. I am consultant led, they weigh me at every consultant appointment, and they’ve said I’ve done well to keep weight gain minimal and they aren’t concerned. Baby is measuring well and moving lots so he seems quite happy in there.

thank for commenting @Keyboard91 - that is very reassuring.

good luck with the rest of your pregnancy, sounds like you're on the home stretch now :) :)

They say that you shouldn't really gain any weight until 20 weeks, then its roughly 1lb a week (not sure for twins) so I wouldn't worry :) I was the same I lost weight and then by week 20 was back at my starting weight then started to gain from then.

I lost two stone in my first 3 months of twin pregnancy going from 11st to 9 (so very sick) I was 10 when they were born 11 weeks early though.

Thanks everyone, I am feeling much better, seems like it's not unusual and I probably don't need to worry as long as bump is evident and wiggly. :)

I lost 2 stone by 16 weeks pregnant, didn't have morning sickness as such, just couldn't go near chicken or I was sick!
My BMI was 31 I believe and I'm only 4ft 11".
I had a big bubba at 38 weeks weighing 8lb 10oz
My DD is now 8 months old and I'm not back to pre-pregnancy weight yet 😊

My friend was told at her consultant appointment at 32 weeks, that she could stop eating and her baby would be fine (I'm sure in jest) but if you are huge, losing weight safely in pregnancy is encouraged.
