Bugaboo Bee 5 - do I need carrycot AND cocoon?

I’ve done quite a bit of research on prams now and have finally settled on a Bugaboo Bee 5.

I think I’ll be buying a carrycot so the baby has somewhere to sleep downstairs during the day. I also like the fact you can take the carrycot straight off the pram and carry it into another room in the house if the baby is sleeping when you get home.

But I was wondering - when they outgrow the carrycot at around six months, will I then need a cocoon after that? Or do they just go straight into the normal pushchair?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

I think after 6 months, you can just buy the footmuff for winter warmth, you don't need the cocoon as well if your getting the Carrycot.

They probably won’t fit in the cocoon after 6 months. Once they outgrow the carrycot you should get a footmuff/cosytoes for warmth. I have the bee and got a Kaiser one rather than the bugaboo one - cheaper and better!

You don't need a cocoon as well but we bought one after a couple of months and I really liked it - I liked the fact that it meant you could strap baby in rather than having them rolling around in the carrycot. We also found continually removing the carrycot from the pram (and taking the hood on and off) was causing a bit of wear and tear that we wouldn't otherwise have had. DS also got to the stage of wanting to sit up a bit and look round before he was ready to move to the pram seat proper so the cocoon was useful then. If I had my time again, I wouldn't bother with the carrycot and just use a Moses basket at home and go straight to the cocoon but it really depends on your lifestyle and how you're going to use it.

We just used the cocoon for the first couple of months and then he wanted to sit up with a footmuff. The carrycot is more expensive so I wouldn't bother.

Thanks all. My thinking was that the carrycot can be lifted off while the baby is sleeping, which I figured would be handy - what do you think?

@tacosplease - your best bet is to go to a store and see how easy you find it to lift the carrycot on and off. Try doing it with keeping it straight so not to tip imaginary baby and add a large bag in so account for weight 3-8kg worth. That might help you decide.

We have ordered a different pram, with carrycot. To use carrycot also for daytime sleeps. I don't plan to take carrycot off indoors, as figured it will be easier to wheel baby from room to room downstairs depending on what we are doing. I saw online someone recommend shower caps to cover wheels if dirty (we have mainly hard floor or ancient carpet that will be ripped up soon so I am not that bothered dirt wise)

It's really not that easy to lift the carrycot on and off. It's a two handed job for sure and you have to reach under the mattress to release the clips. I never managed to do it without waking DS (and even when I wasn't worrying about waking him, I struggled to yank it off with him in there). If he is sleeping in his pram when we get home, I just leave him in there in the hallway.

@mynameiscalypso that’s such useful advice, thanks! If the carrycot is that hard to remove then it sounds like it’s not worth it?

@Caspianberg maybe I will do the same - in which case I could just go for the cocoon!

I think of you have something for baby to sleep in downstairs (like a Moses basket) and the cocoon, you don't really need the carrycot too. That said, we didn't buy a Moses basket for a couple of weeks so the carrycot came in very handy then. But it didn't need to be that if that makes sense!
