Likelihood of 'random' twins

Hey, I'm currently 9+5 weeks pregnant with my second child although I look about 4 months. I'm just wondering has anyone had twins even though there's 'none in the family?' I keep thinking I'm pregnant with twins (although I doubt it) but there's none in mine or my partners family. My first scan isn't for another 3 weeks but I'm so tempted to book a early private one as I'm convinced it's twins. My partner thinks I'm crazy.
So anyway my question, like I said, is has anyone had 'random' multiples? TIA

I do! No twins in either mine or husbands family. I went for an early scan at about 6 weeks as I had some bleeding, fully expecting to be told I had miscarried but instead was told there are 2!

Age is a factor, over 35 you are apparently more likely to produce 2 eggs at a time, which I assume is what happened with me as they are separate sacs and placentas.

I can't say about size as these are my first. I'm 19 weeks now and look like I have a bump but didn't to start with.

I felt really massive straight away in my third pregnancy. I tried to put it down to being stretched out twice already. I had also done a clear blue with the week estimater and it said I was 5 weeks + when I was certain I couldn't even be four. I was in a bit of a panic about twins ( there's none in either of our families).

When I had my 12 week scan I was a week a head of the date I thought and definitely not twins. It was a relief. Maybe you are further along then you think too? You also get bigger quicker after your first as your stomach muscles have been stretched previously

You defo show earlier with subsequent pregnancies. It's more likely to be that than twins.

I have the same concern. But am hoping I'm just bigger earlier as it's my second.

Identical twins don't run in families, they're purely random. Only fraternal twins run in families (or chances boosted by IVF etc). So you're just as likely to have identical twins as anyone Smile good luck!

From my perspective (19+1 with totally unexpected twins) 'random twins' are pretty likely!

as a poster above mentioned, family history actually has no bearing on identical twins. but also apparently even a maternal family history only makes fraternal twins slightly more likely.

apparently both maternal age and weight can play a factor in increasing liklihood of a twin pregnancy, as well as obviously any fertility treatments.

in terms of bump, i started off with a tummy and wasn't expecting to see a bump till later on due to my size, but i definitely popped around week 13-14. if i had been slimmer it's possible i may have seen a bump sooner? but as a couple of above posters have mentioned it's very possible to show earlier with a second pregnancy so that's probably a more likely reason you feel so big already :)
