Hi guys wanted to speak to those of you who have or had pregnancy diabetes mine is type 2 so not pregnancy related but I do know the care is the same. Please can I get some advice from you guys who are or was in my position. How was your pregnancies did you get induced early, did you get extra scans and was there any complications also do you get the choice of a normal birth or does it have to be a c section. I'm so sorry in advance with all these questions but my head is a mess because I only found out 4 weeks ago that I'm type 2 and gone from taking just metaformin to insulin once a night to 3 time's a day and 1 and night it's all been a lot to take in so could really use your advice or guidance Thankyou in advance too any help please Smile

A few of your questions answered below but just wanted to say it's going to be ok! Diabetes is a scary diagnosis but it is manageable and I personally found it didn't affect my pregnancy in many ways at all.

Pregnancy care only differed for me in 3 ways. Instead of being under the care of a midwife you are under the care of a consultant. If you are measuring big you get an extra growth scan. And there is a diabetes clinic you can attend on an infrequent basis who help you manage it well.

The main thing is to keep your blood sugars level and avoid spikes to avoid baby getting too big. Unfortunately that does mean watching what you eat Confused

IF your baby is bigger than would be normal for you they may discuss option of a C-section but as a rule a natural birth is still encouraged.

There are a few potential complications for baby and birth if your blood sugar isn't controlled but it sounds like you are doing everything to make sure that's not the case.

Congratulations on your pregnancy Flowers and hope you are able to enjoy it!

Don't panic, OP! I had diet controlled GD with my DS who is now 16 months, diagnosed at 28 weeks, and this time I developed it right from the beginning, started the metformin by 7 weeks,

First thing is I found NHS diet advice dreadful. It literally would have meant I'd have been on insulin from the get go last time. Try the Gestational Diabetes UK Facebook page for excellent diet advice. Applies to standard Type 2, too. Testing for fasting, post meal levels and the odd spike test for snacks becomes second nature.

You'll be consultant led. In my trust it's initial appointment with consultant, nutritionist and diabetes midwife, followed by consultant visit and growth scan at 28, 32 and 36 weeks.

Diet control advice is induction by 40 + 6, medicated 38 weeks. Large growth might push it to 37 weeks, and a very large baby would be born by elective CS.

My boy was born spontaneously at 38 + 4. I've seen my consultant once this time and she says she will be happy to monitor growth and placental condition past the 38 mark, and treat me as an individual rather than pushing for induction just because. I'll point out I'll be almost 43 by then which does play a role.

It's very manageable with a little planning so try not to worry! Sorry for the epic post it just feels all consuming at the mo.

Hi @fluffies, I have type 1 diabetes. I am 24 + 4. So far all is going fine, I had a scan last week and the baby is growing at the 53% percentile so she is not looking big yet!

I have been consultant let, which hasn't been bad, I see them every four weeks and from 20 weeks have a scan every four weeks aswell to assess growth.

I found my requirement for insulin has increased dramatically, but the consultants don't seem to think this is unusual.

I will be induced between 37 and 38+6.

In some ways, having the extra scans and attention is nice and also knowing I will not go overdue is somewhat of a comfort!

Hiya everyone thanks so much for the reassurance. I have seen my consultant every Monday since I was 12 weeks because my levels have been all over trying to figure which medications and how much I need I still think I'm not on the right level of insulin yet. I am finding it hard to come to terms with my diagnoses but I need to remember to walk before I can run everything will take time for me to adjust to and thankyou all also il will be joining the Facebook group x
