I think it depends when you go into labour. My last one was born at 10pm, so I had to stay in but was out by 11am the next morning. I think if its daytime you can be in and out in 6 or 8 hours. But if its nightime you have to wait until morning. Both of mine were born at night.. I was climbing the walls to get home lol

Dd2 was born at 5am. We were home for 12.

My trust do a 4 hour discharge if you ask for it, obviously depending on you, baby and staff levels. I had dd at 9pm and was in the car going home at 2am as they didn't have a bed for me on the ward

I was discharged after 2 hours with my first.

Here, it’s 6 hours in theory. Though I was in for days with both of mine.

My first 2 I left immediately.
My 3rd they had a new rule that the baby had to stay at least 7 hours and then wait to be checked by a paediatrician. I waited 17 hours for the paediatrician who never turned up, I ended up walking out with my baby

Normal delivery with both of mine but they were both cold. Once they’d warmed up we were allowed home. DC1 was born at 5.40 pm and we were home about 24 hours later. DC2 was born at at 3.45 am and we were out about 12 hours later.

I had my daughter midday, I was cleared to go home about 7/8 (after all the checks and my shower) as long as I did a certain amount of wee!

2-4 hours of no complications and the staff are able to discharge you and baby but does depend!

PixieDustt · 02/03/2020 20:51

I had DS at 17:48 and got discharged at 10am the next morning. We had to stay in a few hours longer as I had GD so DS had to have heel pricks.
Looking back it was quite nice to stay the night for a bit of reassurance.

I had no complications with my third and was walking out the door (slowly) 3.5 hours after she was born. Home half an hour later.

It’s up to you how long you wish to stay, you can discharge yourself at any point. They wanted me to stay a bit longer after one of my DC purely because I was a bit pale and tired but I knew it was because I hadn’t had sleep in 2 days and that being on a busy ward would do me no good so went against their advice and declined staying longer.

Obviously if your baby needs extra medical attention or care then you don’t really have a choice... but in lots of situations they can’t ‘make you’ stay because it’s routine or recommended. If you don’t feel it is necessary then go home.
