Reduced movements 20 weeks pregnant

Hi ladies,

I know the answer will be “call my midwife if I’m concerned” but I just wanted some advice first :)

I’m a slightly curvy woman - BMI 30+ and this is my first baby!

I’m 20 weeks pregnant and for the last week or so have felt what I believe to be movement - Bubbles first and now light twitches.

I realised this morning I’ve not felt anything since Friday night and now I’m starting to worry!

I know it’s early and you can’t consistently feel movement at 20 weeks but I had a MC last year and am a naturally anxious person!

Advice please xx

I had reduced movements... turns out as baby is small, they're just facing the wrong way and I cant feel them as much! Try bot to worry- baby is skinny and doesnt take up all the room in your tummy!

Babbabump · 01/03/2020 09:17

That was at 20 weeks btw :)

Most people are only just starting to feel movements by 20 weeks, the baby can easily move into a position where you can’t feel them.

I was always told (last pregnancy was 3 years ago) to monitor movement from 26 weeks.

Call your midwife or maternity unit. Look for the number in your notes.

Chances are that baby’s being a pickle but this is why you have these numbers.
Go and get checked.

They will probably just listen for the heartbeat if you go in. They won’t hook you up to the CTG until 24 weeks. Worth going in to be sure.

20 weeks is a difficult one as lots of people don’t feel any movement at all.

Best thing you can do is ring maternity triage and ask them... they will advise the best.

In my NHS trust they won’t hook you up to a monitor for baby heartbeat / movements until 26 weeks. I went to maternity triage with severe back pain ( crippling) at 20 weeks.
They used a handheld Doppler to hear the heartbeat.. but nothing else.
I actually had a kidney infection so nothing to do with the baby! 🙈🙈

I’m 22 weeks and I put a post up the other week about exactly the same thing. I’m lucky coz where I work there are loads of midwives so I asked them and they said that it’s still early and the baby could be facing the wrong way, they checked the baby’s heart beat and everything was fine!

YukoandHiro · 01/03/2020 09:49

Definitely get checked out - they will see you if you're worried, but 20 weeks is early to feel consistent movements

MrsRose2018 · 01/03/2020 11:10

Thanks ladies,

Rang my unit, they said to pop in for a Doppler!

Sure it’s fine and he’s just being a sneak but I don’t think I’ll rest today without knowing x

Meh it’s not worrying at that stage. Babies are tiny and have no real pattern until 28 weeks. They can turn away from you entirely at that stage so you won’t feel a thing.

Babbabump · 01/03/2020 21:01

How have you got on OP?

MrsRose2018 · 01/03/2020 21:56

@babbabump hi,

As expected absolutely fine! Good strong heartbeat!

The midwife echoed what everyone else said, the movements won’t get an established routine till 24-26 weeks but if I’m ever concerned to just come in! Safe than sorry eh?

Felt a bit silly but due to previous MC and being an anxious creature I don’t think I would have relaxed! My cousin had a still birth 5 days from her DD and she didn’t act on her reduced movements so it’s kind of a hot button in my fam!

Thanks for all your support ladies xx
