Anyone with a high BMI (over 35) been midwife led rather than consultant?
Or were you consultant led based purely on BMI? Smile

I'm consultant led based purely on my bmi at booking appointment x

Gigitree · 27/02/2020 20:58

I would say I’m led by both. My BMI is over 35 and I have had one appointment with a consultant and he only wants to see me again at 33 weeks and then again at 37 weeks to check growth. Other than that all my appointments have been/will be with my midwife.

MrsBtobe1208 · 27/02/2020 21:26

I'm the same, apart from growth scans at 28,32 & 36 weeks (I'm 33 weeks) I've not seen them apart from after the scans :)

This is my third pregnancy and I’ve been told I’m consultant led due to my BMI. I haven’t seen the consultant as yet though (14 weeks).

Tink2007 · 27/02/2020 21:51

Should add my previous two pregnancies were midwife led.

I have a bmi over 35 and have been midwife led all through my pregnancy. Now 27 weeks still midwife led only extra I have had is the GTT other than that there has been nothing extra.

mamaAJ · 28/02/2020 15:15

@chellefish have you discussed where you plan on delivering the baby yet?
I've been midwife led through mine too as well as GTT, the results were good and given by my midwife a week or so later.
Im hoping to use the midwife led birthing centre rather than the labour ward (I was advised at my booking apt to deliver on ward tho), have you discussed this yet? X

@mamaaj I haven't had that discussion yet but I'm only 27 weeks now so might be in one of my upcoming appointments. My GTT was fine and my blood pressure is fine so hopefully things continue. Tbh I haven't given much thought to the birth yet lol

I was consultant led for raised BMI (over 35, but under 40) until 37 weeks with no other risks or complications. I had my first consultant appointment at 37 weeks, and was signed over to midwife led care at that appointment. I discussed using a local freestanding MLU with the consultant at this appointment, which they agreed was appropriate in my situation. I had already discussed this with my normal midwife (who is based at the freestanding MLU), who also agreed that this is a good option for me, provided there aren't any other risk factors that arise before or during labour (as would be the case regardless of BMI). I have also discussed having a waterbirth with my midwife, who is happy to support this.

I remember being really emotional before my booking appointment because of my BMI. I had made the mistake of reading about the experiences of others, and I convinced myself that I would end up with no options other than a consultant led labour ward birth. In my experience I have found that although there was a higher chance that this could have been the case, my healthcare providers have been very supportive and willing to work with me. I haven't had my baby yet, and there's still the chance that I will end up with a more medicalised birth, but this will be based on any actual problems that arise, and not because of how my healthcare providers have treated me because of my BMI.

I should point out that I had the GTT, which was normal, I've had growth scans which showed baby on the 50th centile throughout, and I've worked hard to keep my overall weight gain since my booking in appointment to around 5kg in total.

BMI 36 at booking. I had one appointment with the consultant (well, an ST6) and was signed straight back to midwife led care.

MrsRose2018 · 28/02/2020 17:34

I’m a chunky momma with a BMI of 37! I’m with the midwives! X

redwinefine · 28/02/2020 17:41

I had a high BMI and was at a midwife unit but the consultant was available on call when there was an emergency

McHelenz · 28/02/2020 21:17

I was consultant led because of BMI, however I saw the midwife advocate so I could birth on the birth centre and had it approved for water birth.

Baby had other ideas though 🙈
