I was consultant led for raised BMI (over 35, but under 40) until 37 weeks with no other risks or complications. I had my first consultant appointment at 37 weeks, and was signed over to midwife led care at that appointment. I discussed using a local freestanding MLU with the consultant at this appointment, which they agreed was appropriate in my situation. I had already discussed this with my normal midwife (who is based at the freestanding MLU), who also agreed that this is a good option for me, provided there aren't any other risk factors that arise before or during labour (as would be the case regardless of BMI). I have also discussed having a waterbirth with my midwife, who is happy to support this.
I remember being really emotional before my booking appointment because of my BMI. I had made the mistake of reading about the experiences of others, and I convinced myself that I would end up with no options other than a consultant led labour ward birth. In my experience I have found that although there was a higher chance that this could have been the case, my healthcare providers have been very supportive and willing to work with me. I haven't had my baby yet, and there's still the chance that I will end up with a more medicalised birth, but this will be based on any actual problems that arise, and not because of how my healthcare providers have treated me because of my BMI.
I should point out that I had the GTT, which was normal, I've had growth scans which showed baby on the 50th centile throughout, and I've worked hard to keep my overall weight gain since my booking in appointment to around 5kg in total.
