Second GTT

I had a gtt at 25 weeks that came back completely normal. At my 28 week scan baby was weighing 2lb 10. At my 32 week scan the baby is weighing 5lb the consultant says I need to take the gtt again as they think the baby is slightly big for 32 weeks. Is there really any need for another test if the first one showed I don't have diabetes. Has anyone else needed a second GTT and came back with a different result?

Gestational diabetes develops because hormones released by the placenta make it harder for the pancreas and insulin to work. The later in the pregnancy you get the more hormones. It's why GD is harder to manage in late pregnancy than early pregnancy. Just because you didn't have it at 25 weeks doesn't mean you can't have developed it since unfortunately.

I would take the advice of the doctor and have the second gtt. In the case you have GD it's really important to be known before birth and managed.

In case you don't have GD at least they can rule that out.

It's just a test at the end of the day.

I had GD and in your position I would try to get hold of someone you know fairly well who is diabetic or also had GD and borrow their glucose meter. You can "pre-screen" yourself to see if there is actual need for a GTT since that is pretty unpleasant and time-consuming. You should ideally test yourself once upon waking (fasting glucose) and two hours after meals containing normal amounts of carbs. You can easily find blood sugar ranges online, or the diabetic person will explain it to you. If your numbers are too high, then definitely schedule a GTT.

I still have my glucose meter and loads of test strips/lancets that remain unused since I'm not planning a second pregnancy anytime soon. If a friend asked to borrow a few then I wouldn't mind at all.

Thank you for the advice :) I just wasn't sure it was necessary as I had already been tested. But as Pastel Rainbows said its time consuming and unpleasant. I felt ill all day after the first test.
