30 weeks - how likely that something will go wrong?

I've been feeling anxious about movements since I felt the first one about 14 weeks ago. There just doesn't seem to be any pattern to them at all, even though I'm now 30.5 weeks pregnant. It used to be that the baby would move after I ate something sugary, but that doesn't seem to happen any more and when I do feel movements, they tend to be at random intervals and for no apparent reason.

I have a scan booked for 36 weeks but that seems a world away. I had a midwife appointment last week where she listened to the baby and said there was a good strong heartbeat.

However, I'm just desperate for the baby to be born as I can't stop worrying that something will go wrong with this pregnancy.

My question is - how likely is it that everything will be ok from this point onwards?

Hey I would love to hear comments and advice on this too. Am only 25 weeks and have sporadic movements. I know you can’t start counting till 28 weeks, but if I have a quiet day it’s a bit worrying. Can things still go wrong that you wouldn’t know about? What are the stats?

If ever you feel unhappy with baby's movements you must go down to the maternity unit. Don't ever feel like yo can't even if it's just for reassurance.

I think the best advice is if you’re ever concerned about movements call up and go in and get monitored. DD was born at 34 weeks when she had stopped moving and this indicated an issue with the placenta 🤷🏻‍♀️ So always trust your instincts

Anytime you are worried, go in and be checked. So what if the hospital staff think you are being ridiculous.

I appreciate that my information comes from so much involvement with SANDS, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity, and that’s because my baby died neonatally (well after 30 weeks) and a huge number of babies still don’t survive after this gestation. There is no safe gestation in the womb. The odds of anything going wrong are low so I don’t want to unnecessarily worry you further but it is a reality for some of us. Just get checked when you are worried.

I agree if you're unhappy about movement then contact your midwife or maternity unit. Throughout my pregnancy baby never had a pattern in movements always random, and sometimes would had quiet days. I mentioned it to my midwife and they assessed me, baby had a good strong heart beat no problems. I actually went over my due date but labour went well and baby was born healthy. x

Is it normal not to feel movements for several hours at a time? I felt two strong movements (like kicks or rolls) early this morning, some flutters around midday and one small movement about an hour ago - but nothing since. This is how it's been most days for me.

I'm just worried that the baby should be moving more regularly and really kicking me hard!

I just had an appointment yesterday. I mentioned that I have struggled so far to recognise a pattern of movements (31 weeks) it just tends to be moving a lot, more or less all the time. The consultant said that probably from 32 weeks as the brain of the baby develops more, I will begin to see a pattern.

I would follow what others say too, that if u are not happy with movements on a given day, to go in to the hospital.
I did this a couple weeks ago as the movement seemed weaker than usual and things were fine... They said I might be a little dehydrated. Good luck x

I'm definitely not feeling movements all the time. Should I be?

I've just felt a couple of movements now, but they're not massively strong and I don't feel the baby is kicking me hard.

It's definitely different for different babies. My sister barely felt any movement at all with her first, then almost constant with her second. Mine seems to sleep for a couple of hours at a time and then flutter around for a bit, then once or twice a day go for more of a kungfu session.

Can you establish what's normal for you?

MsMeowington · 26/02/2020 18:04

My first dc moved constantly- if I drank anything cold she moved, if I ate anything sugary she moved, loud music she moved, constant rolls between 10pm and midnight, early morning stretches first thing etc etc. My second dc barely moved. It worried me sick. I went in for monitoring numerous times and fortunately everything was fine...he was just a quiet baby. When he was born he slept almost constantly for 8 weeks and barely moved during that time.

Have you been keeping a log of when your baby moves? It may not be moving much but maybe it's always at the same time or in the same circumstances (ie. after a cold drink). I think logging it would help you see if there is a pattern and therefore help ease your mind that everything is fine.

But absolutely don't take non or little movement as standard for your baby. If you feel something is up then get yourself monitored. It's easy for me to say in hindsight that my baby was a quiet baby, but during my pregnancy I had no reason to know that so I made sure I got myself monitored whenever I hadn't felt him move for any odd length of time.

Perhaps I need to try harder to identify some sort of pattern. Since starting this thread I've felt about 10 movements! It seems that whenever I'm worried and start really concentrating on whether I can feel something, that's when I do.

I am also 30.5 weeks. Have no pattern so far on movements and had a scan at 29 weeks, and another at 32 ( they scan regularly here).

At the weekend he hardly moved, but i would say i felt movement on and off all day randomly ie nothing for a few hours, then active 5 mins. Repeat. Yesterday and today he has been super active, as in virtually 24/7 alien movements. So it really varies
