Hi 😊 so I'm currently expecting baby number 2 and by my dates I'm 7+1, last week I had spotting (still do) and cramps so we went for an early scan privately and the baby was absolutely fine, bouncing around and a very strong heartbeat for such a tiny baby. The sonographer said to wait for my dating scan but she would guess I'm around 5 weeks as the measurements were around 2.31mm. Does this sound normal to see a heartbeat and the baby moving at just 5 weeks? We got our first BFP 5th February and 3+ weeks on CBD on 19th February. Any advice would be hugely appreciated xxx

2.3mm is about 5+5 according to this chart. Very early to see the heartbeat, but possible.

Early scan advice please!

Thank you! That's super helpful! She did say maybe baby is measuring small - as I have the video of the scan and it's a strong heartbeat and the baby is moving around xx

When you say bouncing around, what do you mean? I had an nhs scan recently and baby measured 3.8mm. There was no movement to see, just looked like a little kidney bean shape in the little sac. The sonographer did say it's very difficult to see a heartbeat under 4mm but not impossible as can be seen as early as 5 weeks.

If you are spotting have you spoken to your midwife? They may be able to refer you to an epau.

The baby was so tiny but moving around so clearly! We had similar with my DD1 but her sizing and dates was always right xx

I don't see my midwife until 6th March and they only run clinics on Tuesday & Fridays at my GP surgery, I've called my GP but they don't have a direct line for her xx

Your baby isn't big enough to have the brain and spinal development necessary for movement of it's own. It's likely that the movement you saw was actually due to your uterus contracting and moving the baby around.

I could see baby moving at my 7 1/2 week scan, but it definitely wasn't moving by itself at my 6 week scan (measuring 3.4mm) when it was just a blob. By the second scan it was 11mm and had a clear head, body, arms and legs.

I had a private internal scan at 5+6 and it was literally just like a tiny slightly flickering full stop. The heart is barely beating at that stage, they definitely don’t move around.

Holly3 · 26/02/2020 17:00

It's definitely not a flickering full stop, I've had plenty of scans previously and that's why I think I'm right on my dates instead of being earlier. Going to book another scan in a few weeks time, thanks for your replies!

Also it's a very strong heartbeat even the sonographer said it's a very strong heartbeat that's why I'm also not thinking 5 weeks like she said xx

It's hard to measure at that stage as the embryo is so tiny....a couple of millimetres can make such a difference on dates.
I went for a scan at 7+5 by LMP but baby only measured 6+1 (with a strong heartbeat).
It had caught up a week by my dating scan so somewhere in the middle of the 2 dates

Holly3 · 26/02/2020 18:53

@sel2223 Thank you for your reply!! Yes definitely think it will level out this time too like last time, going to book another scan in maybe two weeks ish! Xx

@Holly3 good idea. That's what I did to and baby had grown proportionately from 1st scan to 8+2. The second scan was definitely more reassuring to see it was growing and the heartbeat was stronger
