Polyp during pregnancy

Hi ladies

I had previously posted asking for advice on discharge in pregnancy as I didn’t think what I was experiencing was ‘normal’ and wanted to post about the outcome just for anyone in the future. I couldn’t find much online and my midwife was useless, so hopefully this helps someone.

Around 12 weeks, I was experiencing a lot of heavy, yellow discharge. I spoke to the midwife and she was totally uninterested and didn’t suggest swabs or anything. So I just accepted this was ‘normal’.

At 20 weeks, this became brown tinged discharge and I was told not to worry as brown = old blood, though in my mind, at 20 weeks whether this blood was old or not, it’s come from somewhere.

After 10 days I was worried so went to GP who did a swab. The next day, day 11, became heavier and pinker with tummy cramps so went to DAU. A doctor did an examination and said it was from an ectropian and not to worry.

Next day, I passed a blood clot so went straight to antenatal ward who did more examinations and said it was either a polyp or membranes where the cervix was opening and began preparing me for a transfer to a hospital who cares for babies born at 22 weeks!! They assumed it was this scenario rather than the polyp because that hadn’t been identified the day prior.

The next day, a growth scan, another examination by a senior who confirmed it was a polyp after all (phew!). After all the prodding, the blood is now heavier but am told this will go back to yellow after it calms down. I will have regular scans now and have to go back if anything changes as cannot assume the bleeding is from the polyp.

In short, listen to your gut. If you think something is wrong get checked out and keep on until an answer is found. I couldn’t find too much about polyp symptoms in pregnancy (although apparently they are fairly common) so hopefully this could help someone!

@Loranw hi, I just found your thread as I too have found out I have a polyp today after I had bleeding at 10 weeks. After three days of bleeding I finally got seen by EPU and after a scan showing baby looked perfect and is actually measuring 4 days ahead, and no signs of why I was bleeding they had a look at my cervix.

The doctor said they didn’t know too much about polyps in pregnancy and so I’ve been referred to colposcopy. Wasn’t sure if this was entirely necessary but will wait for the referral letter. I didn’t get a lot of info on what a polyp can mean in pregnancy and so was just wondering how you’re getting on? X

Glad to hear that baby is doing well!
I wasn’t referred to colposcopy during pregnancy as the consultant said it wasn’t big enough for them to do anything about it whilst pregnant but to make sure I was seen after having my baby. After that time, I had no more bleeding and no problems during delivery.
I did have to push for a referral to gynaecology to check but all was fine! I presume it came away during birth.
I hope all goes well for you x

@laurendw thanks so much for relying ☺️ Seems a little strange I’ve been referred then, but hopefully is just routine. Am hoping mine settles down like yours and I don’t get spotting throughout! X
