Does size/build have anything to do with size of baby? :)

Hey :)

This is my first so this may be a stupid question but I’m just curious!

I’m really small build wise as I’m only 5’1 and my waist and hips in general quite small and narrow, my feet are a tiny size 2 Blush

we’ve been bought some amazing new baby sleep suits by family and they look so huge against me I think there’s no way a baby that size will fit inside me 😂

Am I more likely to have a small baby or will my body just adjust? My partner is the opposite of me at 6’3 so I’ve got a fear of having a giant baby and having to try not to topple over 😂

Would love to hear from everyone ☺️

I'm 5"5 size 12 and size 4 feet

My DS was 10lb 1oz

I really don't think size of the mother matters tbh

Delbelleber · 24/02/2020 16:11

I have a very petite friend who had a 10lb baby and it put her off having another baby.

I am also curious about this because my current pregnancy has a different dad to my others who were quite big and long but this baby's dad is a much smaller man.... Only time will tell!

Raindancer411 · 24/02/2020 16:19

I don't think it has any bearing on the baby what size you are. If you are worried, speak to your midwife. They will check the size of the baby at 36 week scan too

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 24/02/2020 16:34

I'm 5'8 with broad shoulders, tiny wrists and relatively small feet (can wear 5s). Dc1 was six pounds nine ounces. Dc2 was seven pounds fifteen ounces. They were both born at the same gestation.

My Grandmothers were a similar size to you and they delivered a bunch of 10 to 12 pounders at home with zero issues.

Nowayorhighway · 24/02/2020 16:51

My friend is 5 foot tall and a size 8, her DS was 9 lbs 6 born a week early. I don’t think there’s much correlation really.

makingmiracles · 24/02/2020 16:58

Nope. Not in my experience. 5 children, 3 fathers, two of the men are extremely substantially build, 5”10 ish in height, produced babies at 9lbs, smallest guy is very very slim and 5”5 and he produced the biggest at 9lb 12oz Grin . Now whether he has anything to do with how much food the mother has during the pregnancy well who knows but I’m not exactly slim Jim and ate so much cake during the biggest babies pregnancy Blush

makingmiracles · 24/02/2020 16:59

Oh and I’m only 5ft2

Abitofanexpert · 24/02/2020 17:01

No, I had an 11lb first baby and I'm slim and 5ft3. The midwives said the father's genes determine the baby's size but my DH is small and slight too. They said a lot of big babies are born to taller/broader couples but it's not a hard and fast rule.

When I think of my friends who are really tiny, they did have small babies, though.

LolaLollypop · 24/02/2020 17:03

Both me and my partner are of average height and build. I'm 5'6 and he's about 5'11. Both our babies have been on the 25th centile, born at 6lb 12oz. My midwife said my latest baby was very squashed inside - I don't think I can make them any bigger!
Both me and DH also weighed around that at birth.

MissPepper8 · 24/02/2020 17:06

Im expecting second, 5'5, size 10/12 (same with first), first was 8lb 2oz and the second one is being rescanned as I'm 36 weeks and they think it's a 5lber and under weight (I highly doubt this).

My nana was a very small and slight lady when she had my mum and aunties, she had a 7lb, 9lb and a 6lber.

All depends on baby I think, but I think boys can be bigger.

Skierrdery · 24/02/2020 17:10

The main thing is to eat healthily. Apparently if you gorge on sweet things, you'll get gestational diabetes and have a big baby. It's more likely your baby will be long. Shouldn't be harder to deliver. Kate Middleton is tall and William is 6'2 I'd say, and their babies haven't been big. 7 or 8 pound mark?

userabcname · 24/02/2020 17:16

I'm 5'3", size 3 feet. Ds1 was 8lbs 10oz. I was a size 10 when I fell pregnant with him. I was a size 14 when I fell pregnant with DS2 and be was 8lbs 7oz. My mum is 5'7", broad shouldered and was overweight with both pregnancies - I was 6lbs 3oz and DB was 7lbs 14oz.
Anyway the main thing is head circumference, not weight. That's the bugger to push out! I have a huge head and mum needed an episiotomy even though I was small. Ds1 has a massive head and I got a 3rd degree tear pushing him out. Ds2 was an elective c section and thank god because the newborn hat we had for him didn't fit and the midwife had to go and find a bigger one! Lucky escape there for me!

Puddlesplasher · 24/02/2020 17:18

I don't think so. My poor little 4ft 11in MIL gave birth to 10lb 1oz DH!

Mysocalledlifexx · 24/02/2020 17:44

Im 5'1 and all 6 of my babies have been small ,my heaviest baby was 6lbs 6onz. So for me being small i did have small babies but friends of mine are small like me & had big babies.

Jesskir89 · 24/02/2020 17:47

I'm 5ft 4 but dh is 6ft 5 and the midwife said noway I will have a small baby due to dh size. He keeps swapping from 55th centile to 80th and back down again. 37 week scan Thursday so will have a better idea

Snowflake9 · 24/02/2020 17:49

5ft 1. Very petite build. DH 6ft 1. Baby was 7lb 10.

MousematsRule · 24/02/2020 18:56

I'm 5ft 9ins and always been quite heavy set, not always overweight (although I am at the. Moment) but quite muscly and with big feet (I really make myself sound attractive there don't I Grin)

Anyway, my DD was pretty small (under 7lbs)and the one I am currently growing is looking to be quite teeny too. Midwife thinks it must be a weird genetic throwback.

But anyway, not really much correlation. I hope the stories don't scare you. My very tiny grandma gave birth to my 11lb dad 60 years ago no problems though.

Aren't bigger babies supposed to be easier to push out?

CandyApple1995 · 24/02/2020 19:06

Im 5ft 3 and roughly 8.5/ 9 stone when I'm not pregnant and my babies were:

7lbs 10oz

7lbs 8oz

7lbs 11oz

8lbs 5oz

Although someone I know who is very slight had a 10lb 110z baby!

NemophilistRebel · 24/02/2020 19:08

I am petite, husband tall but slim. Baby was soooo long
I had bruised rib cage for weeks before and after birth because of him kicking so much

PastelRainbows · 24/02/2020 22:26

This was true in my case. I'm quite petite and weigh 103lb when not pregnant (gained 14lb during). DD was only 5.9lb at birth but full-term and healthy. She was soo tiny though, and swamped by normal newborn clothes. She had no problems with feeding or growth but has always been on the lowest 20-10 percentile.

All sleep suits will eventually fit her, so definitely keep those in a safe place :)!! I was gifted lots of 3-6months clothes which she was only able to wear closer to 12 months!

Mistymeow · 25/02/2020 08:23

I am a petite size 6, 5’2” and dh is also small. Baby is also a little one but each professional has said they don’t expect me to have a big baby because of my size. Apparently the baby’s head should grow in proportion to your pelvis size, so really it’s more about how big your pelvis is inside rather than your build. I have gestational diabetes too and definitely have not gorged on sweet things prior to diagnosis. It does not increase your risk of developing gestational diabetes.
