Nappy changing - sudocreme / Vaseline / baby powder

Hi all,

Am hoping that you can help clear up some confusion for me re what to use when changing baby's nappy.

Are Sudocreme / Vaseline to be used if bum is a bit red / nappy rash starting? Is one better than the other, in your experience?

What about baby powder? Does it need to be used to keep bum dry or is it for after bath or do I even need to bother with it?

Am I right in saying that baby oil can be used as an alternative to moisturiser if baby's skin gets dry?

I find bepanthen better day to day (more breathable) and then metanium for nappy rash. No to baby powder, never used it completely unnecessary. I don't know about baby oil as mine have eczema and always used bath and cream emollients.

WhenTwoBecomeThree · 24/02/2020 14:09

I use Bepanthem and never had a problem with a nappy rash, i use baby powder after her bath in her neck rolls and on her legs to dry them better and stop them from being sore

Soontobe60 · 24/02/2020 14:13

Don’t use Vaseline please! We use Bepanthem or Sudocreme on a sore bottom. Never used talc as it can be an irritant if baby has breathing difficulties.

doadeer · 24/02/2020 14:14

I use zinc and castor oil cream with every nappy change and never had nappy rash. I've never used powder

Hermie12 · 24/02/2020 14:17

Also you will need to experiment a bit as all babies skins are different. I had planned to use Bepanthan as it was recommended to me. It didn't touch my daughters nappy rash. But Sudocreme and it was gone in 24hours.

Never use talc, particularly not on baby girls (it's proven to cause reproductive organ cancer).

Only use cream if bum is getting a bit red.

The less you put on baby's skin the better, this includes all creams, oils, soaps, baby bath etc. DC1 had really dry skin, I stopped using all products (only use water) and it got much better. DC2 I've only ever used water and she doesn't have any dry or red skin. She's now 14months and I've never put anything but water on her skin.

yatapina · 24/02/2020 14:19

You don't need any of that stuff.

A little smear of coconut oil or olive oil if you notice redness at nappy changes acts as a barrier between the skin and wetness which helps to protect.

These oils can also be used instead of lotions/oils to moisturise the body of you feel that they need it.

I personally didn't/wouldn't use talc as it's completely unnecessary and can aggravate any respiratory issues as well as drying skin out.

yatapina · 24/02/2020 14:21

@99problemsandthecatis1 the cancer links were never proven as the study was thought to be biased NHS

dimdarkashian · 24/02/2020 14:22

I never used baby powder and only used sudocrem if the bum was really red for my two. Hardly ever had to use it

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 24/02/2020 14:22

Talc should never be used on baby girls. If bum is a bit red, nakedness is the way to go. Some nappy manufacturers say creams can stop nappy absorbancy

MoominKitty · 24/02/2020 14:23

I use bepanthem every nappy change, After fully cleaning and drying the area, and no sore bums or rashes here so far.

I was advised against using talc so just keep little man naked after baths till fully towel dried then use child's farm moisturiser all over, haven't used baby oil as yet but I know friends who use it for baby massage.

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 24/02/2020 14:24

The cancer scare was not proven, but talc particles have been found in ovaries which cannot be a good thing for anyone with ovaries

bloodywhitecat · 24/02/2020 14:26

I only use Bepanthen/Sudocrem if skin is looking red or Metanium if there is any broken skin. If there is no redness I use nothing but he does get some time every day with no nappy on.

I use sunflower oil or coconut oil to massage into skin and never use talc.

happymummy12345 · 24/02/2020 14:29

We only ever used Vaseline at every nappy change

peachgreen · 24/02/2020 14:29

Metanium is a wonder cream, but is only necessary if there's redness. Otherwise I just use coconut oil.

Mysocalledlifexx · 24/02/2020 14:36

If your breast feeding your baby wont get nappy rash, im bf and ive just used nappy cream once when she had her jabs, she is 16wks now.
so maybe just get a small tub. I dont use any creams talc etc and my baby has lovely skin you really dont need much babies skin is better with nothing unless its needed.

Nat6999 · 24/02/2020 14:37

I used Sudocrem after every nappy change, never had any nappy rash or sore bum.

jomaIone · 24/02/2020 14:44

@mysocalledlifexxx that's nonsense. My breastfed baby got nappy rash, usually due to teethings or different wipes or nappies that didn't agree, but you can't just umbrella every breastfed baby.

I only use nappy cream if there's any redness. I usually use sudocrem, the protection one in a tube rather than the usual one in a pot. Or if it's actually rashy, like spotty or broken, which is very rare, I use metanium. When my daughter was tiny, she had a terrible reaction to water wipes, and nothing except metanium worked. Although still on my first every tube of it and DD is 2 in next month. It's good stuff.

I've never used talc, or vaseline.

SilveryMountainStream · 24/02/2020 14:48

Weleda nappy cream (comes in a bright yellow tube, Boots sell it) is a lovely natural soothing barrier cream.
It's a bit pricey but a little goes a long way and it's often on offer.
I've used it with both my two and it's fabulous stuff.

doadeer · 24/02/2020 15:01

I think when they get older and you leave the nappy on longer the cream does add a barrier against wetness so we use lots before bed

dumpling123 · 24/02/2020 15:16

Thanks very much everyone
