So I'm all for baby wipes..... What are hospitals like if you take them..... Are they still saying cotton wool and water.... I mean for me it was like trying to clean an explosion with a q tip!!

Ours didn’t say anything when we used them. There was no way we were using cotton wool and water on the meconium

Our hospital only used water and cotton wool for baby's first poo. It was very sticky but it worked . I used just cotton wool and water until D.C. was at least 12 weeks

PatricksRum · 24/02/2020 03:51

Hospitals can't force you to use cotton wool but it was provided for me. Mind you I couldn't move for a week so luckily I avoided the first poos Grin

We took wipes and the MW used them. It's your baby.

Midwife at my hospital pretty much shamed me for not having wipes. When it came to changing the first nappy I got my cotton wool out and asked for some water and she looked at me weird and said “have you forgotten baby wipes?” “Where are your baby wipes?” I said I thought it was only cotton wool and water for the first few weeks?
She said no that’s rubbish and to just use i fragranced and sensitive wipes if I was worried. DD 7 weeks now and we use all sorts of different brand wipes on her and never had a problem x

Get yourself some water wipes initially. They are 99% water & 1% some kinda oil. Not the cheapest but available in Boots, Supermarkets & online. Amazon is the cheapest place per pack but you have to order a big box!

I never once faffed with cotton wool, the hospital were quite happy with wipes. To be honest, I doubt anyone would have noticed anyway. We were left mostly alone unless we asked for help!

We were lucky, our DD had and still has really resilient skin. She had nappy rash once in her whole nearly 3 years of life! Nothing seems to bother her skin whatsoever! So we trundled through our 9 packs of water wipes & were able to move onto Aldi Sensitive wipes really quickly. But water wipes are a good place to start until you have a grasp on your little ones skin Smile

For my last two babies they never said a word to me about what to use. They did provide me with cotton wool but it's no use at all for those first few poos...I didn't even try with the cotton wool on my second initially as I remembered from the first how bad it was.

You can get cheaper alternatives to water wipes now. I've been using the boots biodegradable wipes and had no problems.

I did use cotton wool and water while in scbu because it was there and I hadn't thought to bring wipes over but swapped to wipes as soon as he was out and none of the nurses or midwives said anything.

Nowayorhighway · 24/02/2020 13:20

I’ve always taken and used baby wipes, all different brands and I’ve never had an issue at all. Cotton wool and water is just weird.

stairgates · 24/02/2020 13:29

Ive always used the cotton wool roll, not the tiny little balls or folded pad strip things. Just tear off a hand sized piece of cotton wool, this is thick enough to separate into 2 hand sized pieces, wet and squeeze between 2 flat hands leaving moist if that makes sense:) I always ended up poking baby with the flimsy wipes and my kids skins have reacted to everything but water grr!!:)

Cheeky wipes are amazing if you haven’t heard of them - not for taking to hospital but once home, they are so much more effective than either cotton wool or disposable wipes, especially on poo. I’m sure I have a discount code if anyone wants.

Bluebutterfly90 · 24/02/2020 13:41

Our hospital told us to bring cotton wool and water. We made the mistake of listening to them. It was a real faff and not what I needed right after having a baby.

One of the nurses even looked confused when we were changing DS and asked us "Don't you have any wipes?".

If you do decide to take cotton wool, just maybe take a packet of wipes as well, just in case. I wish we had!

Caspianberg · 24/02/2020 15:50

I am planning on using reusable at home, but will be taking just some sensitive wipes into the hospital, I assume they will be far easier than having to drag myself out of bed to be warm water etc on ward.

maa1992 · 24/02/2020 16:09

I brought them and they didn't say anything. They were too busy to notice tbh

shutupsteph · 24/02/2020 16:12

At my hospital the midwives didn't even notice or care what I'd used, then again I had god awful postpartum care so 🤷🏼‍♀️

mynameiscalypso · 24/02/2020 16:16

DH and the midwife got through an entire pack of baby wipes with the first poo. I couldn't move as was waiting for the anaesthetic to wear off 😂 Cheeky wipes are great though, much better than normal wipes.

I also don't know why people think cotton wool and water is weird; it was totally standard before baby wipes were widely used.
