Silver Cross Pursuit vs Bugaboo Bee 5

I’ve been looking at prams/pushchairs and have finally narrowed it down to two that I really like - the Silver Cross Pursuit and the Bugaboo Bee 5. Both take you from newborn stage all the way through to when a pushchair is no longer needed, which is really important to me.

I really like the look of the Silver Cross and the basket underneath looks sturdier and bigger. But I prefer the handling of the Bugaboo - it feels lighter and a bit easier to manœuvre.

However, the baby’s position looked higher up and more “cocooned” in the Silver Cross, whereas the Bugaboo felt like the baby was quite low down, more exposed and less protected by the pram, IYSWIM. Is that a fair assessment would you say?

In terms of my lifestyle - I live in London and take public transport (tube, bus and train) fairly regularly. I also drive a VW Polo and use a car quite frequently. I’m not sure which car seat I’m going to buy yet. My home is quite small and there’s not a huge amount of storage.

Does anyone have experience of either/both of these prams and if so, which one would you recommend?

Shamelessly bumping this in the hope that someone can help!

We have a Bee. If you get the bassinet option then the baby is higher up; once you move into the seat, the baby does seem quite low. But DS is super snug - we had the newborn cocoon and have just moved into the footmuff thing now DS is 6 months and he's always warm and he's well protected from the wind. He absolutely hates wind generally and would let me know if he was bothered by it - especially in the last few weeks when the weather has been so vile! I don't know about the comparative weights but I wouldn't want a pram heavier than the Bee for London. It's very easy to manoeuvre and obviously you have to factor in the fact that the pram will only get heavier as the baby grows. We also have a Babyzen Yo-yo for travelling with and I imagine I'll end up using that a lot more in the summer as it's so much lighter

We have a bee too. I don’t know the silver cross one but the thing that made me choose the bee over the yoyo (also live in London and wanted something light and public transport friendly) was that the bee has the option of being parent facing forever (you can have either and it’s easy to swap between by flipping the seat), whereas yoyo has to be world facing from 6 months. I’m so happy I made that choice because as it happens my son is nearly 2 and still loves being parent facing - we chat constantly and I feel really far away from him when he faces out. It doesn’t feel low down to me, especially once they’re over 6 months and sitting up in the seat. Pre 6 months he mostly went in a sling anyway.

Great, thanks both - I think I'm going to go for the Bee! It has a lot of really good reviews online too, which is reassuring - whereas the Silver Cross Pursuit barely has any.

I love my bee. Also live London.

I don't know the other pram it's usually a bee vs yoyo decision around me.

I would get the sleeping bag add on for winter it's so cosy. We had the bassinet for newborn and I felt like my son was very protected and cosy (Jan birth) you can also use it as a moses basket. I moved my son into the normal bit of the pram at 4months

Thanks @doadeer. I was deliberating over whether to get a cocoon or the bassinet - still can't decide! My baby is due in May so won't need as much protection from the elements.

@tacosplease we didn’t get the bassinet (baby born in April). Decided against it because you can’t fold the pram or clip a car seat on top with it on, whereas you can with the cocoon. Having the flexibility with the car seat was especially useful.

doadeer · 24/02/2020 15:55

These decisions are so tough! It depends if you will use the bassinet for naps. I live in a flat upstairs so I needed the bassinet so I could carry the baby up in that.

It's okay now as I take my son out and carry him but newborns sleep loads and I wouldn't have wanted to get him out the pram when he was asleep.

I don't drive so car seat wasn't a factor for me.

Start with your lifestyle and needs and work back from there!

We bought the bassinet first and then also bought the cocoon. They both have advantages and disadvantages. If I was buying just one, I'd probably go for cocoon as I liked the fact that the baby was strapped in but we also used the bassinet as a stand alone cot when we were out and about so definitely got our money out of it. As PP says, it depends how you're going to use the pram (eg how often you'll need to fold it or carry it up and down stairs).

tacosplease · 24/02/2020 16:26

Thank you! If I do just go for the cocoon, I guess I can just leave the baby in the pram if I arrive home and she's asleep.

The bassinet is expensive, although I've seen a few on eBay for around £75?

I'm planning on taking a (UK-based) week's holiday when the baby is around 8 weeks - could I potentially use the Bugaboo bassinet for her to sleep in while I'm there?

I think the official recommendation is that babies shouldn't sleep overnight in the bassinet but DS did a few times (to the extent that he slept 'overnight')
