Pregnant and Hugely important work trip

Hi Ladies
I just found out I am pregnant after a long and heartbreaking MMC late last year....
I am very very happy but I am leaving for a very important work trip at the end of next week.

According to my last period (Jan 22) I am about 4 weeks pregnant even though Clearblue says 1-2weeks.

I'll be flying to America at the end of next week to meet all of my company's very very important people.

I am terrified that morning sickness will kick in there and I'll make a big mess of myself not to mention that all this stress can't be good for baby. What do I do???
What would you do? Any opinion is more than welcome

Congratulations! And enjoy the trip...don't worry about something that may never happen. Not everyone gets morning sickness; you might be lucky. And personally I think that we overstate the effects of stress - babies are born perfectly healthy in much, much more stressful circumstances than yours.

Is it the type of trip you can get out of? It sounds quite important and you may be feeling reasonably okay, not everyone gets bad sickness. Will you have your own room? Will you be expected to stay up late or go out drinking/for fancy meals? Will you be going with anyone you can confide in and can cover for you?

I had some important work events and a holiday when I was in the early first trimester. Yes, I felt a bit crap, went to bed early and ate only the blandest food the hotel offered. However, I wasn't sick in front of anyone and no-one would have known. I probably told a couple of people that I was "a bit under the weather" - perhaps you could be quite jet lagged. Make sure you have snacks, eating tends to keep it at bay I found and rest as much as you can.

As for the stress, I agree with the PP - I think that would need to be high level, long term stress to have an effect. Many, many people go through stressful events in pregnancy (bereavements, new jobs, moving house, relationship breakdown etc). Try not to get overly worried about it (and remember, things can seem much more worrying than normal in pregnancy).

Congratulations! How exciting and wishing you the best of luck in your pregnancy.

I had lots of travel already booked when I fell pregnant, so the bump has been on work trips to Europe and the States and to New Zealand on holiday. I found my US colleagues didn't really drink as much in the UK, so hiding that was easier.

I had bad morning sickness, but mostly it was nausea rather than throwing up. As someone else has said, eating helps so maybe have some packs of crackers in your handbag. Worst comes to worst you can always blame plane food for a stomach bug! Good luck and hope the trip goes well!

Congratulations!
I travel a fair bit and my little bean has already been on 8 flights at 15+2 (and another 6 coming up in the next month).
Salted crackers and fizzy sweets have been a god send.

Thank you ladies for all the kind words and reassurance. You all seem like rockstars truly!!! Much admiration here

There’s a good chance sickness won’t occur until 6-7 weeks but even if it does just make sure you have snacks and eat little and often and you’ll be fine. A little bit of stress won’t effect the baby.
Would be worth making your travel insurance award you’re pregnant though

I found barley sugar sweets (old school sweet shop stuff) were great for keeping queasiness at bay... I'd go and just hope for the best

Congratulations!

You should definitely go on the trip, as others have said, you may be absolutely fine and stress at that level really won't be an issue. And not to sound militant but you have nine months ahead of you of potential pregnancy side effects so you just need to crack on!

I had an important work event at 36+4 and as it happened developed the first signs of preeclampsia that night (debilitating abdominal pain and vomiting) and had to leave the event which was incredibly embarrassing at the time. But, I'm still glad I tried to do it though, as it showed wiling, even if it didn't pan out as planned. I appreciate that's different as I was clearly pregnant but it just shows that you have to manage these events all the way through pregnancy as best you can. Good luck!

Hey @

Hey where about me in America are you going? Just be careful of going to places that are advised against because of Zika virus

Daftodil · 02/03/2020 05:06

I travelled for work when pregnant (only Europe, not long haul) and it was absolutely fine. Take usual flying precautions (lots of water, lots of strolls up and down the aisle etc).

Blame jetlag or plane food if you need an early night.

Congratulations & safe travels 💐
