Hi, my partner is currently 13 weeks (well will be on the 21st) pregnant and last Friday we had our 12 week scan.. bang on twelve 12 weeks. The scan was a success, the Sonographer even congratulated us on having such a healthy looking baby. The NT was measured as 2.10mm. CRL 60.1mm and HC 78.3. We opted for the bloods screening test as my partner is 39 (40 in May). The blood test results showed a high risk of Down syndrome (1-101 chance). Has anyone else had this? It was really unexpected after having such a good scan. My partner has taken the news badly but she is settling down. Not looking for anyone to tell me any different but I would like to know someone else’s story.

A higher risk can be associate with her age.

If it’s something that you want to rule out completely then you can pay for a NIPT test which will give you clarity on downs

NemophilistRebel · 20/02/2020 21:56

And congratulations too Flowers

1-101 is still 100 chances of baby not having downs.

Downs babies are also very lovely and although they might need extra support they are otherwise still wonderful human beings

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 20/02/2020 21:57

Have you been offered an amniocentesis?

I think its due to your partners age tbh, considering the scan was good.

Annafs · 20/02/2020 21:58

To get a more accurate picture you can pay privately for a NIPT which would give you a definitive answer. Smile

But I think it’s also important to consider that a 1 in 101 chance of having it, means a 100 in 101 chance of not having it. X

RileyM1lo · 20/02/2020 22:01

The NIPT we have already looked into and we will go ahead with. Just seemed very odd that nothing was picked up on scans.

Obviously we know that there is nothing wrong with babies with downs.

The 1-101 test just seems to be thrown out there because my partner is in the 40 bracket.

Thank you. The pregnancy is via IVF so it’s been a long couple of years trying. This was our last chance at it too.

I’m very much a glass half full kinda person, I like our chances of a 99.1% chance of a healthy baby.

I had my ds in my early 40s...whilst i new being older the odds were higher of my ds perhaps having downs i didnt request any tests and had no interest in knowing..the odds are still 1/101...try to relax and enjoy your pregnancy...whatever the outcome you will have a beautiful and very much loved baby...congratulationsFlowers

RileyM1lo · 20/02/2020 22:05

I believe it’s because of her age too...

OP posts:
RileyM1lo · 20/02/2020 22:06

Without a doubt they are beautiful and I would love them no matter what

BadCatDirtyCat · 20/02/2020 22:08

The NHS result is basically a calculation based on age, NT and a few other things to give you a probability. The fact that your partner is older will have pushed it up a fair bit.

I'd definitely do the NIPT in your shoes, it is far more accurate.

NemophilistRebel · 20/02/2020 22:11

There is also the 20 week scan which is far more detailed

If you decide to do NIPT or not try to relax and enjoy it, there’s always some reason to be anxious

sel2223 · 20/02/2020 22:11

It's a combined test so the NT measurement on the scan is just 1 part of it. It's then combined with the blood test and the mothers age to give a 'risk' level but the results are just a guide.
That's why you wouldn't necessarily have anything picked up on the scan. It's the 20 week one that picks up more abnormalities.
The NIPT test is far more accurate and not invasive. A lot of people who are told they are high risk through the combined screening test are then given a very low risk result with further testing so try not to worry at this stage.

Springb0ks · 20/02/2020 22:12

Yes, this happened to me. IVF pregnancies apparently adjust the odds of the test results. I think we were 1-130ish? Had the NIPT test and everything was fine. Your NT range is very small which is a very good sign! Another reason for our enhanced risk was low pappA hormone which is also common with an IVF pregnancy. It's a tense wait for the results but ours were done very quickly, we also got to find out the sex of the baby which was a little bonus.

Enchiladas · 20/02/2020 22:14

I wouldn't agree to further testing as it can be very invasive and put your baby at risk.

The 'high risk of' factor in my experience has been very inaccurate.

And I've heard many, many stories of couples told their baby definitely had DS and when they were born they did not have it.

My advice would be to not have further tests, enjoy the pregnancy and love your beautiful baby (of course I don't need to tell you that :) )

RileyM1lo · 20/02/2020 22:19

Thanks for all of the positive replies. I am more concerned about my partner. I am confident the baby will be absolutely fine. This for me is all new, strange, exciting and also enough to give you a bad case of anxiety 😂.

We will do the non invasive NIPT test. The original screening results seem to be very inaccurate with a lot of cases.

OP posts:
WinterCat · 20/02/2020 22:22

I would say the relatively low NT measurement is a very promising sign that your baby does not have DS. The NIPT will tell you for almost certain and I hope it gives you good news that puts your mind at rest.

Has anyone suggested the ARC website? You’ll get a lot more information there.

Catlover10 · 20/02/2020 22:48

My sister had a 1 in 10 chance of having Down syndrome and my mum was 40 when she had her which may have made it more high risk, and she doesn’t have Down syndrome if that helps you at all Smile your odds are still good!

Mummylanie3 · 20/02/2020 22:53

I had a high nt of 4.2 and my risk came back as 1:25 for downs 1:60 for the other 2 I'm 35 I decided to have the amnio as it's the only test along with cvs to give you a yes no answer the rest are just odds luckily mine came back all clear on the three tristostomys and got the full report 2 weeks later which was clear for everything and found out it was a little girl try not to worry as even with short odds everything can still be ok

CoolNoMore · 20/02/2020 23:52

There's a blood test now that's entirely safe and very accurate, according to my ob-gyn. It's called Harmony in Australia, not sure about the UK.

ncagainforfeb · 21/02/2020 06:55

To get a more accurate picture you can pay privately for a NIPT which would give you a definitive answer.

Even the NIPT can’t give you a definitive answer can it? But it can give you much more reassuring odds, such as 1/5000, 1/10000 etc.

BoomBoomBoomLetMeHearYouSay · 21/02/2020 08:51

I am 41 and came back as low risk, so it won’t be purely on age. It is a combination of a measurement of fluid at back of neck and a blood test I believe.

All you can do is have the further testing I think. I do know someone who came back as high risk but then went on to have a perfectly healthy baby. Fingers crossed for you.

RileyM1lo · 21/02/2020 09:46

I think this test result is just to cover everyone’s back. As I have mentioned the NT measurement was 2.10mm which is good.

Finger crossed all will be well. My mind is at ease but it’s good for us to have examples to take to my partner and ease her mind too.

Alonelonelyloner · 21/02/2020 19:15

I got 1 in 7 with my first (-at 22) but then the scan after showed what looked like a perfectly average baby. He was born perfectly average.

My friend (in mid 40s) had 1 in 30 000, her son was born with DS.

I think it's important to know and you have every right to know and have the test if it's there. Now I'm older (in my mid 40s) I know I wouldn't continue a pregnancy with DS because of the potential burden later for my other children. It would be selfish. I support everyone's right to know and prepare how they see fit.

But....remember the chances are overwhelmingly in your favour.
