Glucose on urine advice

I had my glucose test last week and it came back as normal.
I have been a bit naughty this past week and eaten a load of crap and alooooad of chocolate (my husband has left me and this is my second child with him) and today at my midwife app there was plus 1 glucose in my urine and my tummy is measuring well above the top line (I had a scan last week, private, and babies measurements were fine). I'm worried about diabetes. If I've had a bad week but an ok morning today could that explain for the glucose in my urine sample or is just another thing going wrong in my life :( all I had before the app was my breakfast (weetos) and loads of water.
Feeling super stressed right now. My first baby was 9lbs4oz on his due date but no diabetes for either of us.

It could be the sugar from your cereal. 1 reading of 1 glucose isn’t cause for concern. But if there are repeat readings you might be sent for a GTT test to rule out gestational diabetes.

If your baby is also measuring normal I would really try not to worry about it. It’s most likely nothing.

In both my pregnancies I had glucose in my urine in more than one appointment but neither time did I have GD! The mw said pregnancy can just cause glucose in urine without it being diabetes so not to worry too much as long as the GTT is normal.

I recently had ++++ in my wee - sent for the GTT, all normal! I’d eaten a bowl of rice crispies about 2 hours before I did the sample, which aren’t the most sugar heavy of the cereals so remain baffled! Ever since, my wee has come back with none at all 🤷🏼‍♀️

Don’t worry. If you’ve had the GTT, it’s highly unlikely you’ll become diabetic Smile

Thank you!
The baby was measuring fine in my scan on Saturday but my tummy measured well above the top line today!
I'm so upset and stressed.
I just really hope the glucose was a reflection of my eating in this past week not today :(
I had the weetos but then i had lots of water so I hoped it might have flushed it out!

I have type 1 diabetes - any carbohydrate is a 'sugar' and will raise blood sugar. Some are faster than others, e.g. maple syrup is much faster than hummus. Rice Krispies are one of the faster cereals Smile Search online for GI (glycemic index) values if you're interested in this.

I don't know much about GD but I wouldn't worry about a one-time value, if it happens repeatedly they'll test you properly.

november90 · 20/02/2020 17:17

Thank you @ArkAtEee what is the best thing to eat for breakfast to control it?
My glucose blood tests last week were fine so I'm just really hopeful this is more of a reflection of bad diet recently then anything else!
Perhaps weetos isn't the best cereal 🤦🏼‍♀️

Depends entirely on what you like and whether you have any other health concerns. Lots of diabetics like porridge because it raises blood glucose a bit slower than other cereals. Some people have low-carb/high protein breakfasts like eggs or Greek yogurt with nuts and berries. Whatever works for you.

Don’t worry, the main thing is the scan is showing good growth. The fundal height is so inaccurate, I had a midwife who consistently measured me 5 weeks too small causing me so much anxiety- it’s the scans that give a more accurate measurement. It could well be the cereal. I had two instances of glucose and it turns out I did have GD despite having a good diet and no risk factors. It’s nothing you’ve done or could do to prevent it, it’s hormones that cause it. So don’t panic because even if you do have it they will swoop in and take care of you. Pretty much all cereal has sugar in it so I would have a low carb option like granary bread with protein (cheese/eggs).
