Gestational diabetes ... scared and worried

I have gestational diabetes and it’s my 2nd day testing blood sugars, so I’m slowly getting used to what’s good for me and what isn’t. I have another appointment Tuesday, but for some reason I’m completely freaking at the thought of having insulin. My diabetes nurse kept joking saying if I can’t handle needles I can’t handle anything, and it really upset me. Although most of my mum friends managed fine through labour and still hate needles. I’ve always had bad experiences, I couldn’t sleep at all lastnight, I kept thinking about being put on insulin, I really don’t want it. I’m hoping this change of diet works.

Please don't worry. You may well be able to control it with diet and won't need to inject. The finger pricking is fine once you're used to it.

Have a look at www.gestationaldiabetes.co.uk and also join their facebook group. Their advice is amazing and far superior to the outdated NHS advice regarding diet.

I was really upset when I was diagnosed but once you're used to a new way of eating it feels a lot more manageable.
