Bike riding in early pregnancy

Probably sounds like a daft question, but is it safe? Only found out I am pregnant yesterday so am only 4 weeks. Friend wants me to go for a ride tonight and would like to as feel fine but don't want to if it risks anything.

I am 30 weeks and I ride my bycicle everyday to work and plan on doing so. If you are comfortable, I believe there is no reason not to.

With ds I cycled up until 10 days before he was born! I felt fine so figured it was ok...

Easywriter · 04/09/2007 17:07

Phew! Glad you said that Glimmer, like you I'm 30 weeks and I've been cycling on a static bike twice a week since before conception and last week went for a 18 or so mile bike ride (one that moves this time)whilst we were on holiday. It didn't even occur to me that it might not be safe.

Is it as safe early in pregnancy as later in pregnancy?

derah · 04/09/2007 18:22

I've been riding my bike too, through this pg (though only 12 weeks so far) and up until my bump got in the way too much in the last pg. Just be careful not to fall off, but then that's something you generally try to avoid if pg or not! I certainly wouldn't worry at 4 weeks. Even a fall wouldn't do any damage cos bean is soooooo very tiny.

hotpotmama · 04/09/2007 18:22

Thanks for replies. It doesn't increase risk of miscarriage then?

It's perfectly safe! I continued with spinning classes until I was 38 weeks with no ill effects.

Glimmer · 04/09/2007 18:46

As derah says LO is very well protected. To my understanding (and I am no expert!) the impcat of a fall would need to be as big as to cause internal organ damage (if not pregnant) before harming the fetus. However, this is the case for normal pregnancies. Some women have conditions where they are advised to abstain from physical activity altogether. For those it wouldn't be safe. But if you have no reason to believe your pregnancy miught be high risk, you should be perfectly fine. Enjoy!

I cycled up until two days before no 3 was born , which means I was 41 weeks.

I never stopped cycling at the beginning of that or the next pregnancy and up until about 30 weeks I transported 3 kids using pedal power [grin

Enjoy the cycling, I love it

FrauFrau · 04/09/2007 18:54

I was cycling 8 miles each way to work through London until about 28 weeks PG (now 33 weeks and HATING getting the bus every day - but Highgate Hill was killing me!). I had a lot of rather snide comments from colleagues implying that I wasn't sufficiently interested in my unborn child's safety (no one seemed very interested in mine !).

Gamakichi · 05/09/2007 05:30

Bibis - wow!

Can I ask what about if it is uncomfortable? OK, possibly a really daft question but I'd like to hear the answer from others to finally stop my pondering.

I stopped commuting when I was nudged by a london bus just after finding out about pg, plus I was too knackered to do much more than work all day. Then at 12 weeks I did a short weekend ride which was fantastic but afterwards my pelvis really hurt. Waaaay beyond normal "haven't ridden in a while" kind of butt-hurt. It was fine a couple of days later but am scared that next time I might do some proper damage, although at the same time I look at my bike longingly and am insanely of you guys still cycling. Did you change to big padded seats/do you reckon that would maybe help?

I would really appreciate your views, thank you.

(ps sorry if this classifies as a thread hi-jack, new to all of this!)

Glimmer · 05/09/2007 09:38

I have no pain at all, so that's why I think it's fine to continue. I think listening to your body is important. I hurt much more (generally, not cycling) a few weeks ago than now, so maybe try again a short ride in a few weeks and see what your body tells you?!

thehairybabysmum · 05/09/2007 09:50

With DS i rode my bike to work (2 miles each way) until i finished a week before he was born. I had SPD and actually found it easier to cycle than to walk and as i dont have a car i didnt have much choice.

Mind you i cant say it wasnt an effort the last few weeks!! I was v. slow at the end and think i created tailbacks on the hill by me!!

LaCod · 05/09/2007 09:51

LOLOL
i haev read it all now
cheese shellfish bike riding
plastic nails

Fennel · 05/09/2007 10:06

I cycled to work (10 mile round trip) til about 39 or 40 weeks. My only complaint is that you'd think joggling the baby around like that might encourage them to be born on time and they were still late.

Fennel · 05/09/2007 10:07

I did fall off once on an icy corner at about 5 months pregnant. Baby was fine.

hotpotmama · 05/09/2007 13:54

Gamakichi - no worries, you're not hijacking the thread. thanks for all constructive replies. Am full of a cold today so won't be hopping on my bike tonight, just into bed.
