Consultant led pregnancy rather than Midwife

Hi all,

Just had my booking appointment and they’ve told me I need to be consultant led rather than midwife due to v.high BMI.

Just received my first hospital appointment with the obstetrician but I don’t know if it will be my scan or not?? I will be 10+4 on the day of the appointment.

Anyone had experience of this? Particularly at Stepping Hill in Stockport??

Need to know whether or not OH has to be there?

Thanks in Advance

No specific experience, but you may find you could have more scans. But my guess would be that you won’t have your “12 week” scan at that appointment. I’d phone the hospital and check, most consultants have secretaries who can find out for you.

Give them a call to check, the “12week” scans offered between 8-14 weeks so it could be either way.

We saw the consultant immediately after the scan, same building different room. And that’s pretty much the last time I seen her, now 36weeks still marked as high risk.

OH doesn’t need to attend any of the apps but it’s understandable wanting him to go if it’s the scan.

Unlikely to be your scan. The scan letter is usually quite specific with instructions (like drink water and how many people / no kids can attend if that your hospitals policy)

I was consultant lead due to high BMI so just sounds like a routine appointment to meet your consultant / "book" in with them. I saw mine at 16 weeks, 28 weeks, 32 and 36 weeks as well plus had extra growth scans at 28, 32, 34 weeks

You will need extra growth scans as the clinicians will be unable to accurately assess your fundal height (womb measurements) due to the extra fatty tissues on top of the baby

I had this with both pregnancies. I had an extra scan but the consultant appointments (2 of them) covered nothing different to the midwife ones.

I had consultant led care. Had a scan at 6, 8, 12, 16, 20 weeks then onto normal schedule until 35 weeks then monitored more closely as they decided induction at 37 weeks

Hi OP.

I'm in the same boat as you and I had a letter through which doesn't detail exactly that it's a scan (it's tomorrow), the letter just says antenatal clinic appointment and has none of the drinking information etc however it did give me a link to read another letter online (I guess they're saving paper) which goes into all this information. I will find out tomorrow and can let you know but I'm assuming that it is my scan as I will be 13 weeks and have no details of when a scan will be. My midwife at the booking appointment just told me that it means more growth scans towards the end so I am not expecting anything different at the moment?

I often start out as consultant led (not for BMI though) and by the end I'm given the option to transfer back to midwife led because the doctors have been happy with how things have gone. Maybe this could be an option for you?

I'm consultant led and received 2 letters on the same day: one for the scan and one for my first consultants appointment a week later.
Both are at the same place but clearly state who my appointment is with (midwife sonographer for scan and obstetrician for 2nd appt). I would give them a call.
