Sleepyhead worth the money? or cheaper option

Hi everyone,

Just looking at getting one of these sleepyheads - I really like the idea of them but at £130+ are they really worth it? I’ve seen some other similar things from different brands ranging from £35-£65, yet everyone seems to rave about the sleepyhead.

Is it really worth the price tag? Or would a cheaper option be just as good? Thanks!

Dont think they are recommended by the Lullaby Trust - might be a SIDs risk

R2D2abc · 15/02/2020 18:20

I used to wrap a towels and put it around baby as a U shape with the feet at the bottom of the U.
They use to do the same in the NICU( I had a NICU baby) and apparently makes them feel secure.

Annafs · 15/02/2020 18:33

Sleepyheads and other nest type products don’t meet safe sleep recommendations due to the suffocation and overheating risk. Sadly we still have some babies that die in them (especially from the overheating) The lullaby trust has got some info on this.

I’m a HV and tell all new parents this when doing antenatal visits but tbh I would say a good 50% of most people I see will get one anyway. I tell them I’m just there to give them the info and it’s up to them to weigh up pros and cons and make that decision. Hope that makes sense X

Nowayorhighway · 15/02/2020 18:34

Yes they’re fantastic. I used the deluxe with my DS and switched to the grand version once he outgrew it. Such a brilliant purchase, very pleased with it.

Sleepyheads are completely safe fwiw so ignore PP.

Nowayorhighway · 15/02/2020 18:34

They’re definitely not a SIDS risk, never been linked to a SIDS case and they have been used in Scandinavian countries for many years.

www.lullabytrust.org.uk/the-lullaby-trust-issues-warning-about-some-popular-baby-sleeping-products-sold-in-high-street-stores/

Quick google and there have been 12 deaths linked to similar "sleep positioners". Wouldn't risk it....or spend that cash tbh - blatant exploitation of desperate parents.

YakkityYakYakYak · 15/02/2020 18:46

They are a SIDs risk so you’d only really be able to use for daytime naps, so not worth it IMO. You’ll either have a good sleeper or not, I don’t think any product is going to make that much difference. Just get a Moses basket.

Gigitree · 15/02/2020 18:55

I only want them for daytime supervised use so I don’t think the SIDS risk is a factor as we won’t be using them overnight.

Thanks everyone for your input and I appreciate people’s concern but my question is if the sleepyhead brand is worth the price and this is not a debate about SIDS risk.

I had a poddle pod that we used for naps that was great. I wouldn't use one at night but I do do as another poster recommended and roll a towel length ways and create a cocoon under the sheet. A neonatal nurse showed me how and it works really well.

Gigitree · 15/02/2020 19:04

@junobug thank you! I just had a quick search for the poddle pod. I can’t find where sells them, where did you get yours from? Was it cheaper than the sleepyhead?

OP posts:
Pinkflipflop85 · 15/02/2020 19:08

The poddle pod is bought directly from the company website. We had the poddle and the toddle for our ds during the day. He's 5 now and desperate for the adult sized one!

Junobug · 15/02/2020 19:10

I got given it I'm afraid so i can't help with where to buy them but it was about half the price of the sleepy head. I think the price of the sleepy heads, especially the spare covers is extortionate!

Elliesmommy · 15/02/2020 19:13

Used one for ds3 . My friend asked would I like to borrow it. It was fantastic. If I was having another I would buy one. worth the money for sure. Sleepyhead deluxe btw. He got 5 months out of it

Gigitree · 15/02/2020 19:16

Thanks @Pinkflipflop85 I’m sorry if I’m being thick, maybe it’s because I’m on my phone and perhaps I need to be on a laptop. But on the website www.poddlepod.com/ there isn’t an obvious area to actually view/purchase them?

Nightmanagerfan · 15/02/2020 19:19

They are called “Dock a tot” in the US and have been linked to two deaths. I wouldn’t risk it.

We put towels rolled up around the bottom bit of the Moses basket when our baby was very little, as advised by midwifes. They were no where near his face and we removed them by about 8 weeks.

Nightmanagerfan · 15/02/2020 19:19

Ps the Poddle Pod isn’t suitable for overnight use.

Spam88 · 15/02/2020 19:25

I'd just wait until the baby is here - you might get lucky and have one that'll sleep in a Moses basket or cot no bother, and then you'll have wasted a small fortune.

Gigitree · 15/02/2020 19:26

Thanks but as I previously said I’m not planning to use it for baby to sleep in at night.

OP posts:
Gigitree · 15/02/2020 19:29

Thanks @Spam88 I have a next to me crib for night time sleeping and some day time naps and we have the cot part of our oyster travel system for daytime naps when we’re downstairs. So we will just be using it here and there when baby is newborn just so we can pop her down after a cuddle and still move her around the house if need be.
So that’s why I’m not sure I want to spend the £130 for the sleepyhead as we will really only be using it for a little bit here and there, so if they’re just as good I’d prefer to buy one of the cheaper ones. But everyone who I know who’s had one raves about how good the sleepyhead is, so I just wanted to know if it’s worth the money.

As far as lullaby trust I think they fall in a bit of a grey area if you read the info, they aren't a soft nest, the bottom is like medius hard and the sides isn't near the baby's face at all even when they turn their heads.
They are great, one of my top recommendations.
I used mine from 1 week old to 6/7 months, when she got too long I up-clipped the bottom. Also when she went into her big cot I took out the long pillow part and put it under the fitted sheet, making the transition easier. I knew a few mums that did this and worked well. When she started crawling I took it away as she's happiest sleeping on her front. But you'll no when the times right.

In the early months I used it on the sofa for day time naps (she never slept in the Moses basket downstairs). When we went away at 2 months I didn't need a cot. I also used it for tummy time.

Pinkflipflop85 · 15/02/2020 19:49

I think there must be something wrong with the poddlepod site. Just went on myself and you're right...there is no buy option at the moment!

Mammyloveswine · 15/02/2020 19:51

I had a purflo nest...loved it!

SnugStars · 15/02/2020 20:07

There are 2000 SIDS death per year in the USA. Dock a tot/ Sleepyhead has been sold for many years over there, if there have only been 2 deaths linked to me that is a tiny amount and means it’s probably a lot safer than many other places people let babies sleep.

Gigitree · 15/02/2020 20:08

Thanks @Jematron sounds like it was really worth getting then

Ah at least it’s not just me then @Pinkflipflop85

That’s good to know thanks @Mammyloveswine I saw those on the boots website and they’re a lot cheaper than the sleepyheads

Precious little one have purflo nest in the sale at the moment.
