Anyone had a tooth pulled when pregnant?

I've just been told that I will need to have a first upper molar removed after a lengthy and failed root canal. My appointment isn't for another 2 months (it's a nightmare getting an appointment at my dentist) when I'll be 23 weeks. I didn't ask about sedatives as I'm guessing you can't have any. Does anyone else know more about this? Also if anyone has experienced this, what was the pain like after? It's a bit worrying to think the only option will be paracetamol if the pain is bad. Really crap timing Sad

I haven’t had a tooth pulled when pregnant but had one pulled a year or two ago. From what I remember I had local anaesthetic for the actual pulling and then only paracetamol for after. The actual event wasn’t as bad as I’d built it up in my head and afterwards it was more uncomfortable due to the change / soft gum rather than painful.

It took a little while for the gap to feel “normal” but from a pain perspective paracetamol was enough.

Hope this helps a bit and sorry you have to go through it on top of being pregnant Flowers

Sounds like yours wasn't too bad, hopefully mine will be the same. Think I'm worried about it being such a big tooth as well and wondering if that'll make it more painful. I'm quite nervous at the dentist and wondering if I'll freak a bit getting my first tooth pulled Shock the thought of having the gap for months isn't great either. Been told an implant is best but would have to wait till after August due date to have screw put in then another 3 months for the fake tooth!

Hello, I had a lower wisdom tooth removed at 15 weeks pregnant. Only 2 weeks ago!
I had a local anaesthetic and paracetamol only afterwards (nothing else allowed due to pregnancy).
The idea of having it done was much scarier than the actual procedure and I did worry a lot about having paracetamol as the only pain killer after, but it was totally manageable. If I wasn't pregnant I would have opted for sedation and strong pain killers, but honestly it would have been unnecessary. Not a pleasant experience but not worth losing sleep over worrying (like I did!). You will be fine!

I had my wisdom tooth removed this pregnancy when I was 12 weeks- it was growing into the back of my cheek and damaging it. Dentist made me wait until 12 weeks so after first trimester is safe. Had local anaesthetic which is safe and even had dental X-rays because after over an hour it was still failing to come out. Ended up having to go the hospital and maxillo facial remove it- they ended up with dry socket- the pain was excruciating for about 2 weeks and my face was immensely swollen. Only being allowed paracetamol and ice packs was torturous. I couldn’t eat properly which made my sickness and nausea ten times worse (it was already horrific). Without worrying you if there is ANY way of waiting until baby is born I would advise you do that. I’ve never been so miserable in my life. I was lay on the kitchen floor at one point sobbing with the pain and I have a very high pain threshold.

@ChocolateChop that's a biggie as well but sounds like it wasn't too bad, this is how I'm hoping it will be for me. Although @Ibizababyy this is what I'm worried about as I know there's a chance it won't be so straightforward. Especially since I've already been told I've been unlucky with what's happened so far with the root canal and current gum swelling. It's the swelling that's making them want to remove it. It was drained but still there and been told that could cause a lot more problems later on Sad just a bit of a nightmare really but guessing childbirth will be worse Confused

@toastandmoretoast honestly? Childbirth was nothing compared to having that tooth out. I wish I’d left mine as that’s what they said to me- that it would cause problems later down the line. In hindsight I’d have rather left it and had it done after this baby is here as it was that bad. I think it’s probably unlucky to have the complications I had but at least if I hadn’t been pregnant I’d have been able to have all the drugs to manage it!

I had a tooth extraction last week, dentist numbed the area and i wont lie it hurt more than last time i had one out apparantly this can be because the gums are more sensitive when pregnant (i am 22 weeks) been using paracetamol when i need it but its been manageable without most of the time and the toothache i had before was far worse. Good luck

Rubyroost · 15/02/2020 23:51

Yes I had failed root canal and then had it pulled out. All whilst pregnant. It was fine and the pain wasn't too bad. I was just very paranoid about dry socket. Just make sure you follow all advice to avoid dry socjet. Mine was upper molar one from the back

Rubyroost · 15/02/2020 23:53

Also my tooth wa cracked and brittle from root canal so it wasn't straight forward. I don't need any paracetamol

catlady3 · 16/02/2020 00:06

I had a failed root canal (failed after more than 5 years so I kind of blame the pregnancy!). Was in excruciating pain for two weeks before I decided to have it pulled. Local anesthetic and the dentist was very responsive as I kept having to spit out the bile that came up because she was touching my mouth! This was towards the end of my second trimester. Honestly, it was fine, and once the tooth was out, the pain completely went away, I didn't even need paracetamol afterwards.

toastandmoretoast · 16/02/2020 16:37

Thanks for all the replies @mrsc1987 @Rubyroost @catlady3 sounds like it all went ok, well maybe not so much for you @catlady3 Confused bet you were glad when that was over! I feel a bit better about it now thankfully. At least when it's out I won't need to worry about draining my gum, genuinely so gross! Have any of you went for a (ridiculously expensive) implant after?

Nope, you can't see it when I smile.

SylvanianFrenemies · 16/02/2020 17:19

Yes, I had it done around 25w.

Initially it was pretty straightforward. However, I developed dry socket, which is the most painful thing I've ever experienced. It's unusual, so you'd be very unlucky to get it. I was prescribed cocodamol. Heat packs are also great for dental pain.

Moo7878 · 16/02/2020 17:31

I'm not pregnant but had a tooth extraction on Friday. The local anesthetic stung a little when he put it in BUT zero pain for the extraction. None. Needed paracetamol when anesthetic wore off but it's been fine.

XenaAura · 16/02/2020 21:37

I have had 2 abscesses during my pregnancy and had to get a tooth extraction with the first one. I am someone that cannot abide dentists so have had my wisdom teeth out with a general anaesthetic and my root canal done under sedation.
So getting lower molar removed was really freaking me out. They told me at the time they would not be able to put me under sedation due to the pregnancy so I got a few numbing injections. And then paracetamol after.
My next checkup, they told me that they COULD have put me under sedation and it was actually safe for use during pregnancy!
The next day was even more painful than my abscess, and paracetamol didnt really touch the pain, so you will definitely need some sort of painkiller!

But on the talk about pain relief, I have SPD, and my pregnancy consultant did tell me they could prescribe me codeine if my pain gets worse. I was under the impression that we could not take this whilst pregnant, but apparently its actually ok in 2nd and 3rd trimester. But if I accepted the prescription and was taking them regularly then my baby would have to stay in hospital and be monitored for 1-2 days because of addition.
So, if you do need extra pain relief, then co-codamol would be an option if it was just a one off thing, but thats totally up to you to be the judge of if you wish to do that or not.
Personally I have taken a few with my second abscess and everything has been ok =)

mrsc1987 · 16/02/2020 21:49

Mine is a back tooth so cant see it, i think eating hard foods might be a challenge as i have the one on the opposite side missing too but no way paying for an implant or anything

Hey I know this was 5 years ago but how was your experience?
I have had a root canal done but i am feeling dull pain..the tooth is super sensitive when I eat cold and sweet things..dont know weather to get it removed before it gets worse.
