Scans and Hospital Advice in Hertfordshire

I am moving from Glasgow to Bushey Heath in 1 weeks time, by which time I will be 10 weeks pregnant (first baby, aged 32 - me not the baby and very, very excited and nervous). Does anyone know whether I will get a 12 week scan in Hertfordshire and has anyone got any advice on good maternity units in my area.....or those to avoid? I don't know the area at all. Thanks loads.

Bumping for you in the hope that someone in that area can help.

When I was pg with ds (2005/6) and lived in West Herts (St Albans area) I wasn't given a 12 week scan (but had private scans at 8 and 12 weeks - viability and nuchal, respectively).

Now I'm pg again and in North Herts and have been given a 12 week scan (still had to pay for the nuchal).

I had ds, and will have dc2, at Luton and Dunstable, so have avoided Herts hospitals altogether.

Not sure what Bushey comes under. Would Watford be the nearest hospital to Bushey?

Hi,

I am 12 weeks (first baby, aged 28) and am having first scan (Nuchal) at BUPA next week. West Herts don't scan until 20 weeks unless you are completely unsure of dates. We have decided to go private partly for the Nuchal test but predominantly to see the little person that's growing inside!

We have booked in with the Birthing Centre at Watford following a tour and were very happy with what they have to offer. It's midwide led and has birthing pools and a relaxation room with about 10 private rooms.

Good luck with your move.

I think your under watford for that area. With my first i was at barnet. I had all my scans and was under consultant care there. They were really good but i found once dd was born they were short staffed on ward

Your ante-natal midwife will certainly advise you on hospital options. Watford prob is your closest; the only thing to bear in mind is that it's really busy as it covers a huge geographical area. There's a midwife-led low-risk unit, and a more hospital-like delivery suite.

Check out Northwick Park as well, and I'm rubbish on knowing where places are but I've heard good things about the Edgeware Birthing Centre.

Im booked in to the Edgware Birthing Centre and could not recommend it highly enough. They do scan at 12 and 20 weeks and the midwives are really friendly and approachable and youn can call them for advise day or night. Lovely calm atmosphere and good for reassurance and peace of mind.

Im north herts and under Lister and they have been wonderful, and scans are offered at 12 and 20 weeks. Someone I know lives in Watford, and Watford general dont offer 20 week scan, just the 20 week scan.
I have heard some horror stories about Barnet and they were on the BBC undercover thingy a few months back.

Hi, congrats! I live in Watford and had my dd at Watford General nearly 3 years ago. Although didn't have the birth I wanted (induced, distressed baby, emergency c-section), the mwives at Watford were fab. The wards were a bit busy and staff were stretched but still received very good care. Am pregnant at the moment and I've just been told that Watford will most likely start antenatel classes again in September, they were stopped because of cashproblems. You can have a 12 week scan but have to pay for it, you will be offered a free 20 week scan. Watford were also covered by BBC Panaroma program with 2 negative stories, but personally I couldn't fault them and was very pleased with their general care and feel happy to go there again. Hope all goes well for you.
