Drinking coffee?

Are you drinking coffee and if so, how much? I'm 6weeks and not drank coffee since late December because of the guidance saying to limit intake (gave it up at Christmas because it was easier than when working)

However the fatigue since I got pregnant last month is so bad I think I might need to start drinking coffee again... Wanted to see what others are doing. Read 200mg (two instant coffees) is fine, was just being extra cautious.

Moderating caffeine consumption since I got pregnant has been really hard. First trimester exhaustion and working full time is no joke! On days where I drink it I try to stick to a latte in the morning and a cup of tea when I hit the 3pm slump in the afternoon.

My baby's measurements have been bang on average throughout my pregnancy so the amount I drink doesn't seem to be giving me any issues.

JaffaCakeGal · 12/02/2020 14:20

I have cut down to 2 cups a day, I don't think I could cut down any more! I can't imagine not having one first thing or just after dinner when I'm at work, but at weekends I will happily go all day without one.

@fibeee @jaffacakegal do you have coffee first thing on an empty stomach? That's what I used to do before I got pregnant and what used to work well for me.

I drank a cup of coffee in the morning whilst pregnant the struggle is real Grin might be better to drink for example espresso rather than latte, as caffeine is fat soluble so the more milky your drink, the more caffeine you take in

MrsD1990 · 12/02/2020 14:34

@inthefamilytree agreed, it's so hard! Giving up coffee was so much harder than giving up alcohol!!

@MrsD1990 first thing I do when I get to work is drink a coffee with whatever I'm having for my breakfast, can't seem to have one without the other!

fibeee · 12/02/2020 14:39

OP no I usually grab one on route to work after I've had my breakfast at home. Hard habit to break as I pass so many coffee shops on my commute.

Hermie12 · 12/02/2020 14:45

I had 1 cup of coffee every morning (proper coffee not instant) throughout my pregnancy with no ill effects. (DD is now 5!)

youngestisapsycho · 12/02/2020 14:45

I only started drinking coffee when i was pregnant 18 years ago... didn't know I wasn't supposed to. Had about 5 cups a day! I lived on coffee and M&S blueberry muffins Smile

PopcornAndWine · 12/02/2020 14:47

There is no evidence that moderate caffeine consumption is harmful. However I didn't drink any coffee when I was pregnant as I totally went off it!

youngestisapsycho · 12/02/2020 14:49

I did everything 'wrong' in my pregnancy.... DD is nearly 18 and perfectly fine and healthy.

Bezalelle · 12/02/2020 15:29

I can't stomach coffee these days, but I still fancy tea, so I have one caffeinated cup in the morning and a decaf in the afternoon. I drank probably 5 cups of tea and two coffees before being pregnant.

IslayBrigid · 12/02/2020 15:41

I am nearly 12 weeks, I have mostly stayed off coffee but I have had the occasional cup, perhaps about 5 or 6 altogether throughout the last couple of months. Some days I just really fancy one so I have a small cup. I am quite sensitive to caffeine, which is why I am being more careful. I do however always have a tea in the morning (a normal black tea, or a green tea) as do need a little push, and then I have herbal for the rest of the day. I know because I am sensitive to it that 200mg would be too much for me, or could be too much, so I like to ensure I don't go over 100mg - one or two teas is fine, or a small cup of coffee also fine, to keep within this. It also depends on the brewing method and beans in terms of how much caffiene each cup has!
I would go for normal coffee nor instant as instant usually has added chemicals to make it instant... a freshly brewed coffee is probably better in the scheme of things x

sel2223 · 12/02/2020 16:26

I allow myself 1 cup of instant coffee every morning then have decaf or flavoured teas after that.
That means I'm still ok to have the odd bar of chocolate or glass of pop of I'm really craving it

Nowayorhighway · 12/02/2020 16:39

I only cut caffeine out in the pregnancies I went on to miscarry. I know there’s zero link but I found it interesting that I didn’t miscarry the pregnancies where I carried on drinking coffee like normal.

anendhasastart · 12/02/2020 16:45

@Nowayorhighway

I'm 14 weeks pregnant and I was only thinking on the same lines at you today. It's so strange why that has happened the same to me.

MrsD1990 · 12/02/2020 17:01

Thanks everyone for your responses, they're really reassuring. I think I'll start having an instant coffee in the morning and hopefully that will help. This exhaustion from the first trimester really is no joke. But I'm told it gets better in the second trimester, thankfully!

I haven’t had caffeine drinks throughout pregnancy, but my midwife said that one cup of coffee a day is fine! It’s down to personal choice really - I don’t think it would do any harm but personally figure that babies and caffeine probably don’t need to mix 😂

Although, having said that, there were times I could have killed for a cup of coffee! I struggle with moderation so found cutting it out easier

swansloveiceskating · 12/02/2020 18:44

First trimester exhaustion and working full time in a stressful job meant I couldn't give it up completely. I went about 8 weeks at the beginning without any and was really struggling then my midwife at the booking appointment said it was fine to have one a day so I stuck to a cappuccino each morning until end of second trimester when I didn't feel I needed if any more. I did then started drinking it again right at the end as figured it wouldn't have much impact at that point. There were a couple of occasions when I went over my quota (a couple of weddings surrounded by drunk people - they were long days!!)
