Hello

I am due to give birth next week (could be here before or after, who knows 🤷‍♀️)..

Now the problem is I have just noticed that my mum has a cold saw. I have read so many horror stories about new borns and the herpes virus and am petrified!!!!!

My DH works away and if i go into labour mid week he will be a 5 hour drive away (will obviously set off home as soon as I ring), so my mum is the only other person I have to get me to hospital/ be there during the birth.

Wwyd??????

Make sure hands are washed and she does not kiss you or baby Smile

Don't let her kiss the baby till it's over, make her wash her hands first and ask the midwife for more advice on hygiene.

Your mum can still take you to hospital and be there for the birth. The cold sore virus is usually spread by physical contact so it probably means she shouldn't hold the baby and certainly shouldnt kiss them until the cold sore has cleared up. I think you need to explain this to her gently and maybe send some links such as NHS direct because she will probably be disappointed, but I'm sure she will understand that her grandchild health is more important.

You can get cold sore (saw 😂) patches that seals the blisters and prevents them spreading..I think they’re called compeed good luck with the birth 💐

I got the most enormous coldsore 3 days before I was due to give birth. I had to be so cautious and couldn't kiss my new baby for around 10 days which was utter torture but so necessary. She will be fine to be with you and around the baby, but just give her clear instructions that she is to wash her hands a LOT and not kiss baby until the scab has completely disappeared. I'm sure she will be fine with it. Good luck and congrats!

Just ask her not to kiss the baby and I'm sure she already would but to keep ontop of washing her hands.
Women give birth with the herpes virus don't over worry or panic.
ALOT of the stories you've read come from a visitor with a cold sore kissing a new born baby.

Very simple.

Don't kiss your mother.
Ensure she is thoroughly washing her hands after applying any creams or touching it.
Do not let your mother kiss the baby.
Do not share cups or utensils.

Your mums cold sore might have cleared up by the time you have the baby. Relax.
