Just had a letter from the hospital saying I have this, waiting for a call back from my midwife. Freaking out in the meantime, does anyone have this or has had it and knows what it means for me and baby?

Better to have found out before than after, so your in safe hands!

Hi I'm not trying to scare you just telling my experience. My dd1 died from group b strep when she was 15days old. I never knew I was carrying it. I have had 2 children since and what happens now is I get induced at 38 weeks and given antibiotics during labour and then me and baby stay in hospital for 7days and baby gets iv antibiotics every 12 hours for the week.

It's great you have been tested for it and will get the necessary treatment.

@ejmay90 Thank you I'm going to have a good read through of the info

@Queenofheartnomore I'm so very for your loss, I'm glad they have found it just a worry now. Still waiting for a call back from my midwife as I think they only found it as I had reduced movements and some pain so they did a urine sample.

This is the best possible thing that can happen - they have discovered you have it! :) you will be given antibiotics during labour and baby may be given some after birth.

@BeautyAndTheBump1 I hope so, hopefully it means they will be aware so can prepare. Still waiting for call back from midwife 🙁

I had group b strep with my first, it really means nothing untill labour when you have to be put on a drip for antibiotics, as soon as water breaks you have to go in, I wasn't on the antibiotics long enough and my little boy was in intensive care for 2 weeks after birth. I think it is really common to have it, your midwife will explain it all to you

Amyspickledlime · 11/02/2020 17:24

I tested positive for this with DC2. I had a fast labour so no time for me to have antibiotics. So we had to stay in for 2 days and DC2 had the antibiotics instead. Thankfully it was all fine.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 11/02/2020 17:53

It just means you'll both have antibiotics and you'll have a stay in hospital for a while.

They've found it which is great!

csmw · 11/02/2020 18:11

Thanks ladies I've done a bit of reading and they sent me a leaflet, I may have to take antibiotics now as it was found in my urine and then some during labour. Fingers crossed that soets it all out and shes fine 7 weeks to go x

I also have this. They told me I will be given antibiotics at birth and stay in for 12 hours after for baby to be monitored. @queenofheartnomore I'm so sorry for your loss. You seem to be being monitored much more than I've been told I will is that more for reassurance or is this what I should be getting too do you know?

millymae · 11/02/2020 18:26

I was found to have it in my first pregnancy too and was prescribed antibiotics when I went into labour. The only consequence was that I had to stay in hospital for a couple of days afterwards to make sure my little one was OK, which she was.
At the time I was told that my notes would be marked so that in any future pregnancies antibiotics would be given when I went into labour, but something went awry and this was never done and in the heat of the moment I’d forgot all about it when I had baby 2.
The delivery was straightforward and I was discharged home the same day. A few days later I I was out with the baby and just happened to bump into a friend whose husband is a GP. During our conversation I mentioned that she seemed much sleepier than I remembered my first being and wasn't feeding well. He knew nothing of my previous delivery but suggested that it might be best to take her straight to children’s A & E and get her checked over.
I almost didn’t bother because his advice seemed so over the top but I will be forever grateful that he suggested it and I did go.. She was extremely poorly with a Strep B infection and the first couple of days were touch and go. We were in hospital for a week and she was discharged on antibiotics for 6 months Thankfully she had no lasting effects but the situation could have been so very different had she not been treated so promptly.
Queens story above is absolutely heartbreaking and just shows how devastating strep b infections can B - as she says it great that you have been tested and all the necessary treatment and care can be given.

I was told I had it.... During labour.

The midwife came in and asked me if I was aware of the group B. Mine and she's puzzled faces confirmed we didn't know.

Neither my midwife during pregnancy or the go had told me.... The letter was just sat in my records!

Luckily dc2 took so long to arrive that there was time to give me a full dose of antibiotics.

Good luck, hope your pregnancy goes well.

Queenofheartsnomore I'm so sorry for the loss of your daughter Flowers

SnugStars · 11/02/2020 18:36

A family member of mine didn’t know she had it, she had a home birth and her son died a few minutes after birth, he couldn’t be resuscitated.
It’s so important that antibiotics are given promptly in labour and baby is then monitored closely afterwards.
When I asked my midwife 2 years ago if I could be tested she literally told me I was being “silly”. Even though I had told her of my family situation. So I got a private test kit off the internet and luckily was negative.
I hope everything goes smoothly for you.

csmw · 11/02/2020 19:35

Thank you all for sharing your experiences I'd never even heard of it until today. I'm so glad they have found it, scary that it could possibly result in the unthinkable. Hopefully now they will do the necessary diring labour, I'm already classed as high risk so just another thing to add to the list.
