Blood Group ..

I feel rediculous even writing this post but I can’t get it out my head, so why not ask..!

I was quite convinced from my first pregnancy that my blood group was B+. I have a fairly clear memory of looking at the sheet & thinking, I must remember I’m B+.

This pregnancy, my blood group is recorded as A+ ..

I know I’m probably just mis-remembering & being really stupid but I can’t get it out my head of what if they’ve put the wrong thing?! And then what if I needed blood after labour..! And normally, I’m really not a worrier!

Would my GP have any record of my blood group on record from my last pregnancy? I’m seeing them on Thursday, so I could ask (but don’t want to seem silly Blush ).. I just feel like I need to put my mind at rest! But equally, I know the NHS aren’t gona fund an unnecessary blood test!

Someone please give me a knock round the head 🙈

Blood group is usually part of the booking bloods they do and a copy of the results is always sent to your gp. They should have a record of it on the system. Just say you think there maybe a problem with your result as you remember it being different last time.

Your blood group can change due to pregnancy! I was told this by my midwife when she did my repeat bloods in my first pregnancy. It didn't change for me, but I was 100% advised that it can change and it's nothing to worry about :)

Your blood group cannot change.

And if it could - it certainly couldn't change from B to A

Not possible

Delbelleber · 11/02/2020 07:58

I was told I could change from negative blood to positive blood by my mw!
Sorry no help op

Your blood group cannot change. You'd literally have to change your DNA for this to be the case.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 11/02/2020 08:20

Sorry posted too soon.

There are cases of changing between Rh negative and Rh positive. So you might change between A+ and A- for example.

Not between A and B though.

Your blood group can't change but there might have been a mix up at the lab.
It would be a VERY good idea to get a repeat test done to make sure.

i used to work in blood labs where we used to test ante-natal bloods - I remember vividly one lady coming in who was recorded as having one particular antibody in a previous pregnancy, but in this pregnancy she had a different (and almost impossible) one. Turned out it was 2 ladies with the same name and similar dates of birth whose records had been accidentally conflated. It was sorted out.

However, with electronic records these things are far less likely to occur. You must flag it though and get someone to double check your records, and double check your blood group.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 11/02/2020 09:08

NB - the only way you could change your actual blood group would be if you'd had a bone marrow transplant from a donor with a different blood group - it can happen - but if that's not you, then that's not what's happened.

Lindor2828 · 11/02/2020 09:09

I understand your anxiety - I'd be the same. I'd just mention this to your midwife and maybe she will double check, as she'll want to be sure too if you're doubting it.

Obviously it doesn't mean you're not B, but blood group A and O are the most common blood groups. If you look B is actually pretty rare. Obviously you could be B but statistically far more likely to be A! Just get your midwife to double check for reassurance.

SapphosRock · 11/02/2020 09:10

Your blood group can't change but your baby's blood group can be different to your own.

Maybe you're thinking of your baby's blood group? If your partner is B+ then your child could well be too.

If you needed a transfusion your blood would be rechecked & cross matched for a match. Unless it was an emergency and then you'd be given "emergency blood" which is safe for everyone
