Partners during induction?

kayleesmithy · 10/02/2020 20:57

Is your partner allowed to be there during the entire induction?

I'll be getting induced and I want him in the room with me the whole time.

Yes they are. You'll be in labour so they can stay

Pulpfiction1 · 10/02/2020 21:02

Depends on the hospital. I think most make them leave at night but Tbh, your not gonna need him there the whole time.
There is alot of waiting around most of the time. You're better off just chilling watching telly or reading a book. Relax and then get your partner back when the main event starts.

Is there any way he can stay over?

You were at mine, painfully contractions Started 20 minutes after having the pessary. There was no waiting watching tv!

I've had two inductions, you are not in labour. They give you drugs to bring labour on. But you could be in the induction ward for days before that happens.

When I was being induced my DH wasn't allowed to stay overnight with me he had to leave by 8pm as I was on an open ward with other women also being induced the only time my DH was allowed to stay overnight was when we were in a private room and I was due to have my waters broken the following morning at 8am.

He also stayed overnight when our DS finally arrived because I was taken to theatre for forceps etc and my DS didn't arrive until 4am and I was too out of it to have looked after him so DH was allowed to stay with us on the recovery ward until he went and swapped with my mum a few hours later.

They inform you normally that they will call your Partner if you going into labour in the night early hours but normally they don't allow them to stay over night

Bluebutterfly90 · 10/02/2020 21:07

Men were allowed in the induction ward in the hospital where I got induced, including staying overnight.

You'd have to ask the hospital, but they are communal wards so unless you are in active labour - in which case you will be taken to the labour ward and a private room, it's unlikely your partner would be able to stay. With my second induction the cubicle was tiny so there would be no room for a partner to stay over night.

randomsabreuse · 10/02/2020 21:11

Where I had mine the answer was usually yes because they try to put you in a private room but in my case no because they didn't have a private room so was in a shared bay. They let him stay a bit after 8pm to see if I'd go quickly and promised to call if it started kicking off.

Usually the first bit is just waiting for 24h pessary or gel to start things off and not much doing.

JKSN · 10/02/2020 21:12

Depends on the hospital. When I was induced my husband could stay the entire time despite me being on a shared ward with 2 other women, and the same on the post-natal ward. My friend was induced in a different hospital and partners had to leave the ward at 10pm and weren't allowed back in until 8am.

Percephone · 10/02/2020 21:42

I was induced, my husband had to go home to look after my son. However there were 3 strange men in the bay with other women (who weren't in labour) listening to me in labour whilst I was trying to manage painful contractions quietly on my own. So yes, potentially they could stay but please be considerate to other women.

randomsabreuse · 10/02/2020 21:47

Most of the painful (swearing very much involved) bit of my induction was during visiting hours. Initially I sort of thought of the children in the next cubicle, then I stopped caring about anything except the pain. 90% of 1st stage labour was in the bay because they didn't have staff to check and scar tissue from my first made the exams bloody painful! Went upstairs at about 9cm...

You’d need to check your individual hospital. I’ve seen both and to be honest if it’s going very slowly it can be better for you both to be able to just get some sleep and a hospital chair is not an easy place for that

Theholidayarmadillo4 · 10/02/2020 21:52

Suppose it depends how long it lasts! Mine left at 8ish each night. I preferred it because I could get some rest. He was back early each day. They rang him when I was taken down into delivery and he was with me for the whole of the labour. Different hospitals have different policies, but when you're not in labour you might want to send him home- he will be more use to you after a good night's sleep rather than days on a chair.

Elmo230885 · 10/02/2020 22:06

My DH was with me for both my inductions. He's the father of course he should be there, my DH was supportive throughout the whole process.

Dyra · 10/02/2020 22:21

Depends on what capacity your hospital has. If you aren't contracting/in labour by the time visiting hours are over, and you're not in a private room, it's highly unlikely your DH will be allowed to stay.

In my case, as I was being induced for pre-eclampsia, I couldn't stay in a room on my own. At 8pm, labour was decidedly not happening, so we were given a choice. Either we could stay in a private room (fortunate there was one available even though I wasn't contracting), or I could return to the main ward and he'd have to leave.

DH opted to stay since we knew I was likely to be moved down to the delivery suite within a few hours as they had capacity. Which is exactly what went on to happen. I was lucky (and also staff) to have that choice though

Narcheska · 10/02/2020 22:31

My hospital has private rooms for induction ladies so husbands can stay. Only a chair provided for them but it's fine!

It's best to check with your individual hospital what they're process is. I'm very grateful mine had rooms because I couldn't have coped without my husband there

SockQueen · 10/02/2020 23:51

I had a private room for my first so DH stayed. For my second I was in a bay, and got taken to labour ward in the evening as I was hyperstimulating with the pessary, then they gave me an injection which slowed it all down and I was sent back to the antenatal ward at ~1am. I sent DH home as thought he'd be more use to me if he'd had a bit of a sleep.
