Pregnant again - should I attend miscarriage clinic

Hi all. I'm wondering if anyone has experience of attending an NHS miscarriage clinic, especially if you have previously miscarried and are now pregnant again? Any ideas what tests they do, and if they can still do them while you're pregnant?

I had a miscarriage last summer (MMC found at 13 weeks, baby died at 11 and a half weeks). They didn't do any tests on the foetus but my GP agreed to refer me to a miscarriage clinic. Obviously there was a long wait and in the meantime we decided to go to a private doctor and had all the standard blood clotting tests plus a scan of my uterus and everything seemed to be normal. We tried again and I'm now 16 weeks pregnant and (as far as we know, fingers crossed, touch wood) everything is going ok so far.

So my question: the miscarriage clinic is coming up next week, do we go, or cancel? I don't want to waste NHS time, but if there's a chance they'll do extra tests which could potentially help this pregnancy then I definitely want to go..

Can you phone them to ask?

I am under the recurrent miscarriage clinic due to 1 MC and 3 MMC and they didn't do any tests on me until I'd had my 3rd one which was so hard as it's heartbreaking and emotional enough having to go through that and was made even harder that they don't do anything until you have gone through it at least 3 times. Luckily I am now pregnant with our 5th child and due to the miscarriages I was able to have early scans this time so did at 8+5 and 10+5 and today we had our 12 week NHS one and I can happily say everything has been perfect. Good luck with whatever you decide.

To be honest I've found them pretty useless - they just do a scan at 6 weeks to confirm viability. getting a referral after 1 miscarriage is incredibly rare and since you've reached 16 weeks I would say there is very little assistance that they would give you

Hi, I think it's unlikely you would get a referral or any tests. I'm currently going through my second miscarriage (previous one was 6 months ago). I only got referred to the EPU once I began having miscarriage symptoms in this pregnancy. They did not refer me or offer any tests because I had had one previously. They have also confirmed I will not get any tests after this one either. They only investigate after 3 recurrent miscarriages.

If you've already been to a private clinic then the nhs might not do any tests at all, or at best repeat the same ones. Also as you are now pregnant, they would not likely do any tests right now as your hormones and bloods are not 'normal' right now.

Most women who have one mc have a successful second pregnancy, perhaps discuss with gp if you need reassurance.

Thanks all.

@Seventyone72seventy3 I don't know why I didn't think if that - doh! Will try today (although tbh I don't have great hope in getting through to someone who will actually know.)

@Bellsx sorry to hear you've had such a hard time Flowers. Really glad to hear your good news though - good luck with the rest of the pregnancy!

@suchasoftersin I'm so sorry to hear that you are going through this again Flowers. It's such a horrible time. Look after yourself xx

I would go if only to check if you should be taking low dose aspirin (assuming you're not already). There's increasimg evidence that it can improve outcomes for women with a history of miscarriage

caffeinefix · 11/02/2020 12:10

You are only normally referred when you've had 3 miscarriages. I've had two and currently pregnant and asked to be referred but was refused. I asked about low dose (75mg) but they said only if you suffer a third.

BadCatDirtyCat · 11/02/2020 18:14

Thanks - I managed to get through to the secretary and she said to cancel so that's done.

@squee123 - at the booking in the midwife asked a consultant if I should be in aspirin and they said no, plus I've had the blood clotting tests and everything seems normal so 🤞🤞🤞.

Thanks again.

Congratulations!

I would call them.

I was under a recurrent miscarriage clinic for three pregnancies, for my successful pregnancy I was discharged from this team as is their normal, at 10 weeks into the normal antenatal service.

At 16 weeks I think you may be passed the gestation that they deal with.
