Sweet food making me feel sick

Hi ladies,

I am 22 weeks pregnant and thankfully over the worst of the morning sickness. However when I eat anything sweet (chocolate or biscuits mainly) I feel really nauseous for an hour or so afterwards. I keep forgetting and thinking it will be ok, but literally even 1 biscuit and afterwards I feel unwell. It doesn’t seem to happen with natural sweet things like fruit.

Has anyone had this? I was wondering if it is a sign of gestational diabetes? Not having my GTT test for another few weeks.

Maybe I should just stop eating anything sweet... 😞

Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks

Do you feel sick after eating carbs?

Me!

I’m on pregnancy no.2 and I’ve not been able to stand anything sweet in either! I gain back some liking of sweet things by the 3rd trimester but kinda like you, only fruit, fruit jam & fruit flavour yoghurts. Chocolate, cake, biscuits, sweets & even things like Diet Coke are a total no go. They taste weird & make me feel really nauseous!

The various midwives I’ve seen all just chuckle & sympathise - ‘hormones’. I’ve had diabetic tests in both pregnancies & both result totally normal.

Food cravings are always talked about with pregnancy but actually food aversions are just as common! On the positive, it’s saved me a lot of weight gain I recon! I’m kinda glad to not want to snack on rubbish!

Just ride it out, 30 minutes after you give birth, I promise you’ll really enjoy a chocolate bar! After my first, I was presented with a brownie and it remains the best brownie I’ve ever eaten 😂

Me.
Anything sweet makes me so so unwell.
I was tested for gtt at 28 weeks and was negative.
It's just one of those things. The joys of pregnancy sickness lol.

My friend had gtt from 14 weeks and she didn't have the slightest bit of sickness with any particular foods.
I wouldn't worry or over think it, just take it as sickness.

Yep I really went off sweet things as soon as I got pregnant.

If it's making you ill just stop eating sugary things - it's not like you need sugar nutritionally and you can always get back on the biscuits once the baby's been born.

I couldn't eat sweets or chocolate for most of my last pregnancy as they gave me horrendous heartburn. I tested negative for GD. It's just one of those weird pregnancy things I'm afraid!!

Me! I've always loved sweet things but now if I have anything with sugar in it I know I'll have the most vile taste in my mouth along with sickness and feeling really unwell!

Yesterdayforgotten · 17/02/2020 15:21

I have nice low sugar levels and went off anything sweet during my first pregnancy, it was great because normally I have a very sweet tooth! Sounds very normal.

JKD1982 · 17/02/2020 17:53

Thank you so much everyone. So I hope it’s just a pregnancy thing and not related to diabetes!

One more... does that mean then that the GTT will be awful?! I’m worried about fasting then drinking a sugary drink. Did it make you guys feel nauseous? Thank you x

My GTT this pregnancy was not pleasant, I won’t lie. It was hard work drinking the drink (the thought makes me gag now!) & I felt nauseous as hell for the two hour wait. But that was the lack of food for me, I suffered with a HG pregnancy & eating (along with medication) is fairly essential to keeping the sickness controlled. So not eating anything for 12 hours floored me. I practically ran to the Costa in the hospital & ordered two sandwiches & crisps! I felt better pretty quickly Smile Did have a sugar crash headache & feeling very lethargic in the afternoon though!

My first pregnancy, my HG Had subsided a lot before the GTT & I found it no problem. The drink was gross but I didn’t feel overly unwell during it at all.

My advice - take a book or download a movie, find a quiet spot in the hospital & pass the time!

I had this but no GD. Made up for it once baby was born though Blush

A bit late but just wanted to know if the baby’s sexes had anything to do with this. What were you all having?

Kiyentai · 05/10/2020 01:24

I am 17 weeks this week and I cannot eat many sweets either. I can't have sugar (unless I'm craving it). Ice cream makes me so sick. Chocolate makes me sick. Cake makes me sick. Anything really sweet makes me sick lol

For some reason, I can have like a dip cone from dairy queen, and I'm alright. But I am just careful about what I eat. My OB even says sugary items aren't good for pregnancy anyway, so it looks like my baby hormones are ahead of the game.. although I've had a chat or two with this little one about not having a sweet tooth because I LOVE ice cream lol

New2020 · 05/10/2020 02:31

Not a bad food aversion to have! I'm a bit jealous!!!

All I could eat was sugary things..doh!

Vegetables/rice/ pasta made me feel so sick..veg tasted so bitter like poison!
