Trace of sugar/glucose in wee sample - should I be worried?

I had my 28 week midwife appointment today and had the usual wee test. The midwife detected a trace of sugar/glucose in the sample (not sure which?). She said it's nothing to worry about as a one off but they will check my wee again at the next appointment and if sugar/glucose is found again then it could be a cause for concern.

She asked if I'd eaten anything sweet before doing the sample, but I'd just had weetabix and a banana for breakfast - no chocolate or anything like that.

My next appointment is four weeks away and I'm a bit scared now - should I be worried?

Just wanted to reassure you OP I also had a trace of glucose in one sample and then a few days later it was completely clear. Bananas are quite high in natural sugars actually so it might have been down to that. I also had had a bowl of cereal and glass of cranberry juice before my test so I put my result down to that.

The reason they check is that if they repeatedly find glucose in your urine it can be a symptom of gestational diabetes which they will probably do a GTT test for.

Thanks @fibeee. I will be worrying for four weeks now until my next appointment! I was only thinking this morning that everything was going too smoothly and something was bound to crop up Sad If I do have gestational diabetes could it harm the baby?

I've looked at the factors that mean you're more at risk (higher BMI, diabetes in the family etc) and I don't have any of them!

Like the previous poster said -fruit is quite high in sugar and weetabix I guess is fairly high in carbs so it will prob be that.

tacosplease · 10/02/2020 15:37

Thinking about it, I ate the banana about 2.5 hours before doing the wee sample, so I don't think it could be that?

I had traces of sugar/glucose in every single wee sample they took from me from 8 weeks to 35 weeks. I barely ate anything in the whole time due to sickness so goodness knows where it came from. I had to do the GD test 3 times and each time it was fine.
Please try not to worry, I know it’s easy to say but it’s probably nothing

abbs1 · 10/02/2020 15:44

I've had sugar in my urine quite a few times and it's been after I've eaten something even fruit and then done the sample hours after eating it and it still shows up. I'm nearly 33 weeks and not been sent for testing so I honestly wouldn't worry.

tacosplease · 10/02/2020 15:46

Thank you so much for the reassurance @Youvegotafriendinme and @abbs1

OP try not to worry too much about it as it is most likely nothing. The midwife who did the test probably told you the same. If they were really worried about you or the baby being affected by GD they'd be bringing you in sooner to do another test.

I haven't been diagnosed with it personally but I know 2 women who had GD during pregnancy (one with twins) and they both delivered very healthy babies.

tacosplease · 10/02/2020 15:49

Thanks @fibeee. Yes, the midwife didn't seem concerned at all, just said she'd do another test at my next appointment - which has surely got to be a good thing?

Not sure if this is the advice a medical professional would give you, but I buy wee strips online on amazon and test my urine regularly to check for any obvious infections or protein or glucose etc, and although they are not diagnostic when not done by a professional, they may help if you are really worried?

fibeee · 10/02/2020 15:58

@tacosplease yes she doesn't seem too concerned. I am being closely monitored for PE right now and am being seen by midwives once a week (sometimes more). They won't take risks when they are genuinely worried.

tacosplease · 20/02/2020 12:49

Having read up on the risks of GD, I’m now wondering why the midwife is waiting so long to test again? There will be a four week gap between the appointment where they found the trace and the next test. Surely if a trace of sugar has been found they should test again quickly to establish whether you do have GD or if it’s a one off? Any words of wisdom would be much appreciated...

Just a trace of sugar I wouldn't worry at all, it is just because you had the fruit and also the weetabix is full of carbs. It take about two hours for carbs to be metabolized into your body so you would expect it to be a while after you ate not immediately.

tacosplease · 20/02/2020 14:36

Thanks so much for the reassurance @LH1987.

I'm 38+4 and repeatedly had glucose in my urine. On my last midwife appointment I had glucose again. From what I've been told if there are 2 consecutive readings with glucose they'll send you for a gd appointment you'll most likely be given a blood sugar test kit and have to check your sugars on waking and an hour after meals.

I've only just been diagnosed at 38+4 after having 4 samples with + glucose only the last 2 were consecutive the others there was a test in between without any sugars. I also had a GTT at 26 weeks which came back Negative. It can occur at any time so I wouldn't stress. I'm now watching what I eat and have been told to limit my carbs and sugar intake. Try having things like a mini fry up for breakfast and salads for lunch.

If you do have gd they'll talk you through your options but I've seen many people on a gd uk Facebook group have very healthy normal babies.

Good luck

Ps sorry for my grammar!

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 20/02/2020 19:16

I had trace of glucose in my urine at 32 weeks, then by my 36 week appointment the baby had a growth spurt that meant im now having to do blood sugar testing for 4 days. I have to go and my sugar numbers reviewed next week to decide if I have gestational diabetes or not. I also have a growth scan next week.

Tbh I dont think I have it, all my numbers are within range and are what they should be. We'll see!

I also had a banana as part of my breakfast when I got trace of glucose in my urine....

tacosplease · 20/02/2020 19:49

Thanks. Maybe next time I should do the wee sample before I have breakfast, so it’s not affected by any food I’ve eaten - what do you think?

I had ++++ glucose in my wee at an appointment around 31 weeks. I got referred for a GTT and it was negative. My blood sugars were fine.

At all subsequent appointments, I’ve had nothing 🤷🏼‍♀️ I’d eaten a bowl of rice crispies about 2.5 hours before the ++++ sample and that’s all. Pregnancy makes me hate anything sweet, so I don’t eat chocolate, cake etc! So a bit baffling really but pregnancy is weird!

Honestly don’t worry OP. A trace is nothing to worry about Smile
