Any tips for GD pregnancy?

Hi all,

This is my first pregnancy and I am 28 weeks now. I had a GTT due to my parents having type2 diabetes and it turns out I have GD. All my emotions are on a rollercoaster now:(

I received a call from the hospital saying they are taking over my care from community midwife and from now on I’ll have closer care. My first appointment with hospital is next Wednesday so I’ll be explained what to do/eat etc. I’ve already cut on sugar and trying to control my carbs intake.

Still any first hand tips from any mamas with GD is appreciated!

There's a facebook group for mums with GD. It's really helpful and supportive and a good resource. It was hard having a GD pregnancy as I'm a chocoholic but baby was fine and I lost weight (gained it all back now though)!

Visit gestational diabetes uk. Their advice about food pairing and 8 golden rules are far superior to the nhs generic dietician advice you'll receive soon. There is also a Facebook support group with the same people, where you can ask questions, get support.

Hi @Altmosphere - I developed GD when I had my GTT in week 24, I'm now 33 weeks and have been able to control my blood sugar levels ok since. When you go for your appointment they will talk to you about what you should eat to keep your levels low and what will increase your levels. I found this really informative as you take for granted that you can still eat the same foods you would if you weren't pregnant - and this obviously isn't the case.

I've had to adapt my diet & what I am eating/drinking but knowing it's for the benefit of baby has made it easy for me to do. I do still have a treat every now and then if I've had a good day of blood sugar readings.

If you need to chat, let me know but try not to worry - if you monitor it and test your blood when you are meant to as well as eat and drink the right foods, you'll be ok. That said, what you may eat this week may not work in a few weeks time as you're further into the pregnancy. To begin with it's all trial and error x
