I'm nearly 30 weeks pregnant with my first baby, lately the heartburn has started to get unbearable to the point where it wakes me up on a night, I'm drinking Gaviscon by the bottle and eating Rennies like no tomorrow, I've tried drinking milk.. sucking mints.. nothing is working and it's so painful!
What, if anything does anyone recommend to ease the pain! Getting desperate Confused

I had to go to the GP and get omeprazole as I couldn’t cope with it any more

I had to go to the GP and omeprazole as I couldn’t cope with it any more and now if I miss a tablet I really feel it

Eat slowly, small amounts, figure out what sets it off and avoid that. In my case I've noticed naked bars don't go down too well nor does jalapeno bread. Sleep propped up. Says she who after a bad night of it (late night whole pizza) has eaten nothing today but focaccia with butter and cheese, cheap chocolate and mango pieces, and drank orange juice. Stopped at six though so hoping it won't be another rough night.

I'm 34 weeks and suffer really bad with heart burn.

I found milk helps also an apple.

Agree with omeprazole - the only thing that made a difference to me. Apparently you can buy if OTC which I didn't know.

ifeeltheneedtheneedforsleep · 06/02/2020 21:55

Avoid omeprazole, it's not worth the long term problems it can cause. Ranitidine seems to be back in supply so if you can get that prescribed that works well. I find gaviscon double action tablets help as does banana and melon

another vote for omeprazole. Considered very safe for baby. Yes long term use can cause issues in a small minority of people but you would be looking at 10 weeks max. I asked my midwife today about the risks and she says they're not aware of any of their patients ever having an issue from short term pregnancy use. Completely took my pain away and had allowed me to get some decent sleep again which has to be better for me and baby.

You can buy 10mg capsules over the counter but stronger doses are on prescription which is what I needed.

Literally the only things that work when its bad are gaviscon swigging from the bottle - temp relief - or drugs from the dr.
Milk makes it worse in the end.

SEE123 · 06/02/2020 22:31

Another vote for milk and sleeping propped up. Rennie's/Gaviscon tablets worked for me temporarily, or if it wasn't too bad a flare up.

SpaceDinosaur · 06/02/2020 22:51

Avoid milk and dairy. It offers short term immediate relief and then your body produces more acid to digest it which in turn makes your heartburn worse about 20 min later. Milk is a bastard!!!

mrsc1987 · 06/02/2020 22:54

Seriously ask for omeprazole i couldnt be without it and it wont harm your baby at all

Keha · 06/02/2020 23:24

Sleep propped up and try not to eat anything close to bed time. I'm also keeping gaviscon in business at the moment!

mangotango15 · 06/02/2020 23:33

Try Love Heart sweeties.

These were recommended at one of my Antenatal classes

Meadows89 · 06/02/2020 23:47

Gavisgon Dual Action and sleeping on my left side has helped - apparently has something to do with the stomach being that side and the acid can't come up as much. I've also cut out trigger foods which is pretty much anything fatty or acidic. Good luck! It's brutal when it's bad :(
