I would say don't do it
but that's cause I think they're revolting and bad for your real nails

they're absolutely safe in pregnancy.

Acrylic should be fine, but I would see a manicurist as there are loads of types of nails these days, and some are rather nce and some are not.

yeah and what ever you do, no matter how tempting it is do not pick them off! i did this and it actually hurt and my nails were ruined, it took months to get them back to normal. thankfully i now have lovely pregnancy nails

Dawn2820 · 02/09/2007 19:32

so you both think its safe no harm?

Hi Dawn
had to reply to this as I'm obbsessed with having nice nails so I know your dilema!
The thing to worry about with acrylic is the fumes and inhaling the dust - not it geting into your blood stream and reaching the baby. So really just make sure you are in a well ventalated room.
Having looked into this a lot I would say get gel put on instead - far fewer fumes. I don't know where you live but you should be able to find a salon that does gel - google it. They look as nice as acrylic but they aren't quite as strong - but I find them fine.
What I would say is when you get them taken off do not have them soaked off in acetone because there is a risk it might be absorbed - it's the quickest way to do it but not a good idea. Insist that they are filed off but make sure you get someone who knows what they are doing and doesn't damage your nail bed - never, never let anyone use any kind of drill on your nails!
Hope that helps!

Agree gel is better, and to the idea of a drill (am a qualified if long absent manicurist)- why would anyone do that?

Pheebe · 03/09/2007 07:53

Hi Dawn
I asked my sister about this. She's chief educator for one of the leading acrylic nail products suppliers in the UK so knows what she's talking about. You'll be fine to have your nails done as a one off during pregnancy. There's a theoretical risk for the technician if she's pregnant and applying and removing acrylics everyday. You should also definitely ask for the nails to be filed off afterwards and ask for a paper mask (any decent technician will offer you one anyway). As one of the other posters mentioned gels are a good alternative, depends on whether you want painted or sculpted artwork (or any artwork). Her advice is to shop around a bit, have a look at samples on display and choose someone working in a reputable salon.
Hope your friend has a great wedding

Peachy, drill is to file down the acrylics/gel more quickly than using an emery board not on your actual nails!!

Dawn2820 · 03/09/2007 13:28

i can do the gel nails myself i have the stuff at home, i may do that then as i want them doing i just didnt want it to affect the baby
